Zeigler and UT put out a link to a GoFundMe at 3 p.m. on Wednesday and within an hour, the $50,000 goal had already been met. As of Thursday morning, the page had raised more than $340,000.

this certainly is a great story and I feel for this guy and his family, but since we're talking cold hard cash - isn't this what insurance is for?

Unless you have a mortgage, most states don't legally obligate you to have homeowners insurance. And then there is insurance on the contents. Most people in this country don't have coverage that will replace the house and contents.
