Greg Sankey Says SEC Breakaway Talks Over College Bill Are Real

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey acknowledged Monday at SEC Media Days that conference officials have held "real" discussions about the possibility of the SEC operating outside of the NCAA if the current college athletics landscape remains unstable.

Sankey emphasized that a breakaway is not the conference's preferred outcome. Instead, he said the SEC would rather see a workable national model emerge through cooperation among the NCAA, conferences, lawmakers, and the courts.

However, he warned that if college sports continue to face uncertainty surrounding NIL, athlete compensation, and legal challenges, the SEC must be prepared to consider other options.

While Sankey announced no plans for the SEC to leave the NCAA, his comments served as a reminder that the conference is evaluating every possibility as college athletics continues to evolve.

The SEC had the bully pulpit 4 years ago. They no longer do so if they were to leave the rest of the country would laugh and over the next 3 years they would lose players as players want to win “National Titles” and not “SEC Titiles”.

There’s a breaking point. For example, pooling media rights with other conferences is a non starter. Plus, don’t kid yourself, players will still want to play in the SEC at college football’s southern blue bloods. The SEC’s departure could also have a domino effect. That said, I don’t think it will get that far. No one cares about programs like Georgia Tech or SMU, etc,

If the sec does break away from the NCAA I won’t feel confident with this guy leading the conference. Sankey helped create the current climate of college sports. Screw him.
