I just think there's a chance for an added dimension to the offense. If we have a guy who a capable run/pass option, it could give the defense a totally different look to have to defend for 3 to 5 snaps a game.

I just think its's a low-risk, high-reward prospect.

I hope Fields red shirts so we create separation and get an extra year.

I agree

Eta- especially if ncaa passes the rule that says you can play in three games and keep your redshirt

If Fields is as good as advertised we won't have him for four years so we would be saving him for nothing. Not playing him is a waste of talent and robs the team of a seasoned backup. If Fields is underutilized his dad might push him to baseball.

There is little chance that Fields won't play some.

Fromm has been running RPOs but mostly passing for obvious reasons. Fields will run the same plays but run more frequently.

Did Lamar Jackson or Deshawn Watson leave early?

If JF is a three year backup you think he’ll go in the draft with two more years of eligibility? You so mixed up.

Fields might not even start until he is a senior. How is he going to go pro in three years if he's playing backup all three years?

If he doesn't play as a Freshman who fricking cares if it gives us a shot to have him for another year at the end of his career?

Playing him as a Freshman because you are scared he will go pro early is just dumb. Unless he actually gives the team the best chance to win, there is no reason to play him.

Was it not widely known during his recruitment, when every P5 school in the country was after him, that the assurance was he would see meaningful snaps day 1. barring injury or a meltdown in his development

Everything I read back then indicated it was absolutely pivotal for him and his family

He actually was quoted as saying he didn't mind the idea of redshirting.

LINK

quote:

“I know some great quarterbacks redshirt their freshman year just to learn the system and get a close relationship with the receivers. So, it’s not really a big factor, playing my first year,” Fields told SEC Country. “The most important factor is how well I fit into the academics, how the family environment is there and just having a great relationship with the coaches.”

Very humble kid, let's hope he stays that way.

That’s what everyone said about Eason too.

Also...I don’t remember hearing how Fromm hit a “wall” during Spring practice last year.

I hope Fields turns out to be fantastic...but trying to force him into the mix for garbage snaps just because he’s the new shiny thing doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Use him if we have to..but if not develop him and preserve as much eligibility as possible.

You don't put him in because he's a new shiny toy, you put him in because he's one play away from taking over a team trying to get back to the championship and he needs more experience than running scout team with nobody watching. We would've played Fromm last year and we'll play Fields this year.

Technically, they were right - he was gone after two. Not for that supposed reason, but still...

Lol at trying to make hay with “I don’t remember reading about Fromm ‘hitting a wall’ last year in spring practice.”

Good Gawd man- let it breathe! JF has been a college QB for a total of ONE MINUTE and is learning an entirely new system.

I agree which is kind of my point. We’re already talking about taking snaps away from our sophomore QB that took us to the NCAA Championship last year so a freshman that at this point is totally unproven can have his own “packages” and bring a different “dimension” to the offense.

Let’s wait until he shows he can grasp the offense we have now before we start running him out there.

I say we let the season dictate what we do with Fields. IF Fromm is crushing opp defenses, then let him have some mop up duty, but try and keep the redshirt in tact. IF the season goes downhill (unlikely), then Fields may see even more time and a redshirt might not be an option.

The fact is without Sony and Chubb we don't know how this offense is going to perform. It will play out on the field...and luckily we are only 5 short months from watching it unfold lol.

I do not however, see a point to blowing a redshirt with Fields coming in against scrub teams once we are up 35-0. If we are gonna blow his redshirt, I want him thrown into the shite Vietnam style against LSU, AU, and all the rest.

That’s what I’ve been saying since we landed him. Try to keep him RS this season, work him in in special situations when Fromm is a junior/senior. Then have him start two years? Maybe one if he leaves early? I don’t really know how to act. When was the last time we were stacked at Qb? Which hell maybe we aren’t even stacked, we may not even see him play a down until September of 2019. Who knows ? It’s talking out of our asses season right?
Id bank on Fromm being a 4 year starter unless Fields takes his job over.

Side note: will the talk guys still be asking the question about Fromm being able to play under pressure in big games when the season starts this fall?

Idk man. QBs tends to stay. Haven’t they been talking a lot lately about a lack of development at the next level?

I agree completely. As long as Fromm is getting it done we need to preserve eligibility for Fields next year. Let him learn and develop and get on the field his RF year.

Of course that begs the question who our go to garbage time QB will be....assuming we’ll need one. Will Stetson Bennett be unleashed on some unsuspecting defense?
