Why are we mediocre+ in football, suck in basketball, and mediocre- in baseball when we have all this talent in our state?

I feel your pain but I disagree that we are mediocre in football.
My Big 3 Sports UGA rankings:
1. Football - Top 10 often winning our division and occasionally winning the SEC. Top 5 recruiting capable of competing for a national championship.

2. Basketball - Usually not in the top 25. Typically middle of the pack in the SEC. Generally don't make it into the NCAA Tournament. Mediocre recruiting; not nationally competitive.

3. Baseball - Better than basketball but still not consistently competitive nationally. Similar to basketball in that we get some outstanding individual players but not enough to contend for a NC. Current team is not in the top 25.

It boils down to one thing: Coaching.
We have a wealth of in-state talent and Kirby Smart has proven that he can consistently recruit at a top 4 aka playoff team level.
Whereas we have yet to find basketball and baseball coaches who can recruit at a playoff level.
Bottom line: We need an AD who can reel in a basketball and a baseball coach who can bring the talent we need to compete on a national level.

Boy - finishing middle of the pack in SEC is not SUCKING, btw....and the answer is $$

Really...we were a contender for CWS last year before COVID and could be on the verge of that this year, if we get some experience and pitching comes around.

You play basketball in GA and travel all over the country and you gonna go play for UGA instead of the blue bloods or a rising program...GTFO

We hosted postseason regionals in 2018 and 2019, were ranked #2 before the season ended early in 2020. Currently 7-1 this season and ranked in the top 20 by two baseball polls (Perfect Game and College Baseball Nation)

In other words, Baseball is WAY better than basketball right now and it’s not close

Agree about basketball plus Stegman is still a dump even with the renovations.
Gotta get a new facility.

Baseball is a different story. How in the world is Vandy a consistent national power (ranked 3rd preseason) with more NC's? South Carolina was a dominant powder a while ago with a couple of NC's.LSU under Bertman also had multiple NC's. There's zero reasons
we shouldn't win big like those schools.Metro Atlanta is the epicenter of travel ball and youth baseball.

How in the world did we get blown out twice by FSU in the '19 regionals?
'20 would have been interesting had the
season not been cancelled and we'll see about this season once we start conference play.

Baseball was an absolute force here 2000-2010 (4 CWS appearances, 1 game shy of winning a 2nd national title in 2008). Perno lost his edge when Chance Veazey and Jonathan Taylor were both paralyzed in back it back incidents and McGarity let the facilities fall behind while Carolina, LSU, MSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and now Florida have all built new or expanded their stadiums and practice facilities. By comparison, UGA continues to slow play maximizing Foley’s potential for whatever reason.

Stricklin has turned into a good hire (and was considered a good hire when he was picked up, too). Vandy’s success is almost entirely because 1.) Vandy can sell an academic opportunity nobody else can and 2.) Tim Corbin is legit the best coach in college baseball right now

Because teams get hot in the postseason and Mike Martin made a hall of fame career on that strategy, riding it to yet another CWS appearance on his way out the door (keep in mind that same FSU team went to Baton Rouge in the Supers and beat LSU too. Teams of destiny happen and we got them in back to back years with Duke and FSU)

Better than LSU or SC in the same era? Better than Vandy from '10 to '20?

Took a while but I think he's the right guy but we need to consistently make it to the CWS and he hasn't done it in 6 full seasons.

Lots of teams can sell academic opportunities including UGA and multiple teams in the ACC.

I have no idea how a baseball coach prepares his team to "get hot" in the post season.Bobby Cox should have taken notes.

FSU promptly went 1-2 when the reached the CWS and Duke didn't even make it to the CWS.

FSU got otherworldly hot swinging the bats in that series. They looked like they could have taken 2/3 from the mid 90s Braves pitching staff.

I missed the part where any made this comparison? OP said we were mediocre- and Durden pointed out that we were pretty dang good those years.

OP's statement was idiotic but calling the baseball program a force was perhaps a little over the top in relative terms when compared to teams in our conference.

Sorry, don't see why we can't be better or just as good as SC ('00 to '10)LSU ('00 to '10) or Vandy '('10 to '20÷)

Do you?

Yeah, pretty comparable: 4 CWS appearances with 1 runner up finish. LSU in that span had 4 appearances and 1 CWS title in 09, Carolina had 4 and 1 title (went b2b in 10 and 11, their only titles in program history). Vandy has 4 CWS appearances ever, all from 2011-2019 when they got both their titles.

Keep in mind, LSU and Carolina are both historically much better programs than UGA. Clemson is, too, for that matter. Just because baseball is a big deal in metro ATL now doesn’t mean it always was.

You’re underselling the rebuild job he had to do after Perno fell off and the real lack of assistance he has gotten from the AD in that regard. He’s not Sully at Florida or Corbin at Vandy level good but he’s turned into an a above average college coach for us and has managed to keep Scott Kenny here who may be one of the best pitching coaches in the game (I feel differently about Daely as our hitting coach if you want me to gripe about something).

quote:

Yeah, nobody except maybe Duke can sell what Vandy can sell. And Vandy gets to sell it on top of living in Nashville and playing in the SEC which is the premiere baseball conference. They’re not the only show in town but there’s a good reason their product stands out.

quote:

I have no idea how a baseball coach prepares his team to "get hot" in the post season.Bobby Cox should have taken notes.

College baseball is a completely different game from MLB, in terms of talent and motivation. Emotion and momentum matter and are very real intangibles in this game and some coaches know how to get the most out of their team at the right time.

quote:

FSU promptly went 1-2 when the reached the CWS and Duke didn't even make it to the CWS.

You’re way underselling just how difficult it is to even make it to Omaha, let alone win a game or even win it all. Programs like MSU, FSU, Arkansas, UNC, Georgia Tech, and Clemson (all of which are historically better programs than Georgia) have never won it all in Omaha. Hell, Florida hadn’t won one until 2017 and they’re also historically better than we are.

Duke by comparison got hot at the right time and played well over their ranking when they got to Athens. It happens.

That statement wasn’t hyperbole; UGA baseball from 01-10 was as good as any program in the country at the time.

If you want to make the argument that we could and should still be that good then I’m here for it but it starts with modernizing facilities. Foley does not sell the image of a program willing to invest in development and success. That the program is where it currently is now is a testament to a good job recruiting and developing talent into respectable SEC competition. It should be better but we have fricking chain link fencing still stretching the baselines and virtually no outfield seating to speak of, let alone any kind of standalone practice facility for baseball (we literally have 2 batting cages inside Foley and some drop nets that can be used in the IPF of football isn’t using it.

If you want to be pissed, be pissed at THAT.

I feel like you're nitpicking on the term "force". UGA went to 4 WS plus was a runner up. To me, that's a force.

I get that it isn't ideal but did you ever fake a look at Florida's facilities prior to the new one?

Talk about a dump (never been just seen pictures) but by all accounts thats what it was and it didn't prevent the Gators from becoming dominant... they should be along with UGA.

Yall GTFO with this nonsense. Yall must not be used to winning. Yes, we're winning more than we did with Ray Goof, but we're far from being good in football. We had two season recently and they were Kirby's first two seasons, and when Richt had us in the SEC champ game against bama, but the rest have been mediocre. Yall have been conditioned to be losers.
