It matters more the less talented you are. Like I said, AJ Green had 56 catches as a true freshmen. Doubt he had all the routes down pat.

The AJ Greens are rare but it's not unusual for top tier WRs to come in and be very productive.

So clearly Kirby and Coley are dinosaurs because we don't have an AJ Green right now.

Got it.

The receiver excuse is lame and tired. teams are able to scheme WR open all over the country. Also, we have talented dudes at that position. Losing holloman and having cager definitely hurt the depth, but Pickens, Robertson, and Blalock are more than serviceable.

If they are struggling to beat press man, scheme around that. Use motion, use bunch sets, pick routes, etc. It shouldn't be this hard with our talent

I agree with this but the question is: Just how bad must our preparation or in-game coaching have been such that we would lose to a 2-3 team that hasn't been in our universe in recruiting during Kirby's tenure?

It's one thing to lose a close one to someone in your ballpark talent wise. But unless those recruiting rankings aren't actually indicative of talent, you would think we could play mediocre and still win.

It must have taken monumentally lax preparation to lead to us making 1000 little mental mistakes. Not really what you would expect from a Saban protege...

I agree. Smart has been praised for his attention to detail.

Hell... he recognized that the players were not ready before the game. He has the detail. Getting 18-19-20 year olds to buy in is the challenge. You would expect upperclassmen like Fromm, Simmins, and Landers to not have those yips.

Saban as been at Alabama for 12 seasons (not including this one) and has 5 NC's in his Alabama career.

Saban won his first NC in his 3rd season and his second in his 5th season. So two NC's in his first 5 seasons.

Once Smart gets one, he'll be entitled to the benefit of the doubt.

He's in season #4 so he's falling behind the Saban standard...but if he pulls it out this year or next, I would say he's definitely back in the running.

Yeah but Bama was far from his first head coaching job. Pretty unfair to compare Kirby's career here to Saban's career at Bama.

WTF? He’s in the middle of his 4th year. We have been nothing but super successful for most of that time. It’s not like we’ve been churning out 8 win seasons and he’s just refused to change anything.

Kirby almost had his first NC in season 2.

And remember, when Saban came to Alabama, there was no Saban to compete against.

ETA-- And SAban Lost to South Carolina in one of those NC seasons!!!!!!!!!!

Pickens is on pace for 45 or so. Not bad compared to the best WR we’ve ever had.

Saban had been a HC for 10 years when he won his first NC, It took him 8 years to have a 10 win season and win a conference championship.

Jake Fromm has been sacked 4 times in 174 attempt. Yet his QB rating is 31st in the nation. His completing percentage is 8th in the nation, but tied for 36th in yards per average. This is proof we're not even targeting the down field receivers.

Swift is 2nd in the SEC in rushing and ypc. Looks to me like everyone is doing their job except the play caller. Do Fromm not have the green light to open thing up if he see it? Or is Fromm uncomfortable sitting in the pocket? Looking at those stats its not like we are not successful opening it up.....we're not even trying. The protection is there. Fromm hasn't been good hitting the receiver down field which is something that should/must be addressed in practice.

Fromm has chosen to check into many of the run plays and has chosen to throw it to the checkdown etc many times. He’s what 20/21 years old? He has lots of freedom in this offense and has been fooled by some very well paid coaches with a few decades on him a good bit. It’s not like the playcall only has one option...

He checks out of more run plays than he check into. Really how would you or I know?

He throws to the checkdown when the other receivers are covered.

Do you remember Eason the Checkdown King? Eason had wide open receivers down field and was still throwing checkdowns.

Fromm throws checkdowns when his receivers are covered, and he's a gimp.

got it.

Thanks for chiming in.

We've also had a lot of shuffling on the offensive line this year due to some injuries. I believe this contributes to some of the OL problems

But we've cross-trained our OL for the last three seasons. There should be little loss when players move around.

Me too. I'm going to bed and I'm going to think about you while I fall asleep. I'm going to pretend things in my bed while I think about you.

Yet also sometimes when they're not covered...as we have seen...but hey, no one ever said he was the next Drew Brees.

Well wait...at least one analyst did.
