Tom Herman appears to be picking up steam. Not sure how I would feel about that...

Coming on the heels of Georgia’s announcement that Mark Richt wouldn’t return as head coach in 2016, a source tells 247Sports that current Houston head coach Tom Herman would be highly interested in the opening in Athens.

The 40-year-old Herman is regarded as the hottest up-and-coming coaching candidate in college football. He spent three seasons as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator — winning a national title in his final year with a third-stringer in Cardale Jones — prior to landing the head job at Houston last offseason. While with the Buckeyes, one of Herman’s primary recruiting territories was the Atlanta metro-area, which could help him if he were to be hired by Georgia.

Herman has been linked to the opening at South Carolina, but reports say he’s withdrawn his interest. Industry sources believe he’d be content waiting at Houston for something to open at Texas or Texas A&M (Herman played college in Texas and GA’d with the Longhorns), but an offer from Georgia would be enticing for Herman to turn down.

According to the 247Sports Team Talent Composite, the Bulldogs have the seventh-best roster in college football, based on recruiting history.

Yes to Herman Eason would flourish in that system IMO. But we must get better oline and WRs to make it work and I hope like hell we can keep Pruitt but Herman may have a guy in mind. When u come into a job like UGA u need to be able to have your coordinator

I have always said we haven't been the elite program many here think we are. Three years with Herschel Walker does not a dynasty make.
That is not to say we can't become an elite program. If Florida can, any tean can. Richt brought us close to the top. We just need an HC that can coach the players up to the next level. Then we can contend for the SEC title every year instead of hoping we don't stumble and miss the East title.

I have to disagree. Georgia is not Alabama, Michigan, or USC who have like 30 titles between them. However, Georgia as a program has always been just on the outside of that top tier/elite group. UGA is #11 in the all-time wins in college football history (FBS schools). #13 in winning percentage for teams who have played at least 100 games. 2 Heisman trophy winners, another national championship in 1942 to go along with the 1980 one (not AP champions, but were recognized by more than half of the polls used at the time as the consensus champions), and 3 more national titles recognized by the college football hall of fame.

Back on topic. My thoughts on some of the names being thrown around (in no order).

Kirby Smart - I would not be at all disappointed with that hire. Being a coordinator he's a little less proven than established head coaches, but his situation is one that is less risky than most coordinators.

Dan Mullen - Interesting for sure. He has done more with less. I'm a bit biased against him because he is a Florida/Urban guy, but I think I could get over that pretty quick.

Tom Herman - The sexy mid major pick. Only 1 year of HC experience so I don't know that he's really any better than Smart in that regard, but no denying his offensive aptitude.

Jeremy Pruitt - He's already on staff and I am a fan of his fire. I also tend to prefer defensive minded coaches as a personal preference.

Gary Patterson - Good football coach, but he does not fit the mold of the 'young gun'. He will be 56 when the new seasons kicks off. While not old, it is older for a coach starting at a new gig which would be my only hesitation (Saban was a year older at Alabama, but that situation is a bit different)

Chip Kelly - I don't see it happening. He does not fit the culture of Georgia at all.

Jimbo Fisher - I mention him only because his name came up a few weeks ago. Interesting choice. He certainly fits the "proven winner" criteria.

David Shaw - I bring him up not because I've seen him tied to any reports, but I just think that he would be a good fit. He also fits the criteria of a HC who could be looking to make the jump to an even bigger school than the one he's at.

Larry Fedora - Honestly I hope that we don't bring in a coach over 50 (I'm an age-ist I admit it), but I'm also not sold on him either. He has had to work through a lot at North Carolina, but this is his first really good season at NC. He really only had 1 good season at Southern Miss too.
