Brice Hunter
Terrence Edwards
Fred Gibson
Malcolm Mitchell
Lindsey Scott
Aj green
Hines ward

Just imagine if wims played 3 or 4 years with us. It would have been nice.

Talent wise? Production wise, he's obviously not very high, but a very important skillset. I think he'll do well in the NFL personally. I was really hoping we'd have gotten the production from him last year that we ended up with this year, but he had a hard time getting on the field due to not being a good blocker.

Yess just based on talent and I agree he will do very well in the NFL. He has the size, speed and good hands to get in at least in the second or third round.

Fred Gibson probably a good comparison then... Hope things in the NFL go a little better for Wims. Gibson described his NFL tenure as "not being in the right place at the right time". LINK /

5th or 6th on that list IMO. He has been very good this year and I hope he excels in the NFL. My concern is most of his catches this year were back shoulder jump balls. That may be harder to pull off in the NFL. I hope he can create separation as well. DGD

I think he became a phenomenal blocker this year.

Importance to team- VERY HIGH
Production- not so great

We probably beat Bama if he plays the entire game. He was Fromm's bail-out guy.

Hard to say really. The thing about Wims is he did one thing at a damn near elite level (go up and get jump balls), he was an excellent blocker, and had the great ability of using his hands to snag balls rather than using his body. On the flip side, he's not the fastest dude and his route tree seems to be limited.

If we're simply ranking on "best receivers", I'd put AJ/Terrence at the top 2 by themselves for sure. After that you've probably got a muddled group with Wims/Ward/Malcolm (*followup below). Another thing is that we only got to REALLY see wims for 1 season so it's kinda hard to accurately rate him.

*I wasn't born for Lindsey and was still a young pup when Brice was playing so although I've seen some tape of him I didn't see him play game in game out like some of the other guys, so it'd be a bit hard to really rank those accurately.

He sure did... honestly, by late last season, he was already getting better... pretty sure it was him blocking downfield for IMac on one of his big TDs... just wasn't something he'd been required to do before (to be honest, how many 6'4"+ receivers are sent out to be blockers on a regular basis ). The good thing is that it should increase his value to an NFL team, even if it doesn't necessarily move the needle from a draft stock perspective that much.

I told one of my friends the other day that while Wims wasn't an AJ or Terrance Edwards but I'd have taken him over Reggie Brown, Fred Gibson, or Malcom Mitchell. I just think the guy was pretty damn clutch and before Mecole heated up down the home stretch I really felt like every defense knew that every big play would be going to #6 and more often than not he'd haul it in.

Fred Gibson was massively overrated.

Uh... ok...

quote:

Gibson had a career average of nearly 18 yards per catch and sits fourth on Georgia’s all-time list with 20 touchdown receptions

Or we could just take his stat line of:
quote:

Career stats: 161 catches, 2,884 yards, 20 TD

And compare to 2 different stat lines of:
quote:

Career stats: 182 catches, 2,373 yards, 19 TD

and

Career stats: 166 catches, 2,619 yards, 23 TD

More yards on fewer catches (and comparable TDs) than:
Brice Hunter
and
AJ Green

Also, 2 of his seasons were at the same time as Terrance Edwards, leading WR all time for UGA. AJ did not have the same competition for receiving targets. Brice at least has the excuse of playing in a less pass happy time for football.

Sounds like you’re saying Gibson was better than Green.

If Wims would not have gotten hurt in the National Championship game he could have solidified #2 behind A.J. Green.

People tend to forget how good Gibson really was. I remember watching him in college thinking he was a sure fire star. He was that good. He’s no AJ Green, but he’s a better college WR than Wims.

FTR, Wims was a beast and will most likely have a better NFL career

For what Wims has meant to the 2017 team, he was phenomenal.

Not my point at all, but from a purely statistical standpoint, a case could be made. More importantly, he's not by any reasonable metric 'overrated'.

Not sure if agreeing with my more recent comments or disagreeing with my original comparison...

We have the benefit of a larger sample size from Gibson. I agree he had a more substantial role overall (given the longer career at UGA), but if comparing single season to single season, I'd put Wims in the same range... Particularly given the offensive balance this year... Wims was a monster even when teams knew he was the primary target down field.

I get that he has world beater stats. He always seemed to miss those clutch catches or have bizarre drops in a wide open field, and that is what I most remember about him.

In what regard? He is certainly top 5 UGA receiver of all time.
