When is roughing the kicker a 5 yard penalty, and when is it not?

Not that we would have won... but just trying to understand why we didn't get an automatic first down?

Roughing the kicker is never a 5 yard penalty...they called running into the kicker which is a 5 yard penalty.

The first one should have been roughing, as his leg was hit extended before his plant foot hit the ground. The second one was a running into

Running into a kicker is supposed to mean light contact with kicking leg when the ball is not contacted.

Roughing the kicker is heavier contact to include the plant leg and the ball is not contacted.

All that goes out the window if the ball is blocked.

Definitely believe the first penalty should have been roughing and you knew based off of that one, you wouldn’t get benefit of the doubt on the 2nd flag.

As a ref, after giving them a slap on the wrist for the first one, when they did it again, I would have called the 15 yarder. How the frick do you get called for it, replay the down, then commit the same damn penalty again?

There's more than one high school ref that posts here, wouldn't you do the same?

I can't remember the last time I saw roughing called. It seems like every one is a running into call these days with only the 5 yard penalty.

Yeah, after the first no call, there was no deterrence for ND.

The first one was clear roughing. Since they missed that call, they should have called the 2nd one. Refs stole a possession there.

What conference were those refs from?

They seemed like lightweights.

To me, calling that 15 yard sideline penalty was excessive. I've seen much much worse brushes that weren't called.
They should have just issued a warning on that one.

Did it the second time... that pissed me off to zero end.

And, not giving a sideline warning when the stupid ref ran into the stupid player that got into the white area.

Plus, all the freaking holding ND didn't get called for.

oh well, football is done for me for now. I will pick back up in the fall.

I think the CFP got what they wanted with Franklin vs Freeman...... Going to be historic.
