They got it right this year: the four best conference champions.
THIS should have been the basis every year. That makes the championship games defacto quarter finals and makes expansion to twelve unnecessary.
The only potential controversy/subjectivity is between 4 and 5.

Because Iowa being left out is a lot more acceptable than FSU, and every team with a real claim would compete.
I hate voting in sports. Nobody in the south should be comfortable with leaving things in the hands on national media types and power players.

Yah, I don't have much interest in watching it either. I expect Bama to win it all again. I'm not a Harbaugh or Texas fan. Don't care much about the Pac 12. Bama is better than FSU and there was probably also pressure to have high ratings. If it was FSU as opposed to Bama they would have had really low TV ratings. I blame Auburn for this mess.

This right here! If UGA had played they way they are capable of and not wet their pants at the sight of Bama they would have been in, period.
