Sure looks like that ball was not way underthrown*

It looks like the ball should have never been thrown to a well covered receiver.

Not going back to look at the video in real time, if I'm just looking at the picture, I'm going with under thrown. The defender is trailing, he's getting beat, put more on the ball and the only thing the defender can do to break it up is PI. I say this as someone who likes and defends Carson Beck regularly. But just looking at the pic, I'm saying under thrown. Or, possibly, he's throwing it exactly where the receiver is suppose to be, but because he's covered up in that spot, the receiver makes and executive decision to change the route and Carson didn't pick up on it. Hard to say what's going on in these guys' minds in real time in the heat of battle.

Every hall of fame QB throws an interception sometimes. I don't get why people are piling on to Carson Beck on this game. Were it not for his millions of dollars, I'd feel bad for him.

Because he ditched a school he committed to play with for some extra money and girls. He then proceeds to throw interceptions when the team needs him most, when he had phenomenal OLs and good WRs. What HoF QB in 3 years has lost 6 games where 4 of them were for throwing picks on the final drive to win?

Why do Netapp drives fail constantly?

Sure looks like he didn’t have to jump in the air either…

Zone or man cover 2?
If it was 2 man under, the CB would not have been in trail looking back at the QB… he should have been staying tight with him in phase in a true man under scenario. The CB ended up 40 yards down field in a zone look, while also getting help from the safety. For what it is worth, cover 2 has 2 deep safeties playing deep halves, the other side of the defense almost looked like cover 3. So it was cover 2 on one side and 3 on the other. Definitely a complex defensive scheme.

Other than both feet in the air and arms fully extended?

Seemed to me cover 2 man and the corner looked back because he knew the safety would be there due to only one deeper route running on their side. Beck never should have thrown that ball.
I get Beck wanting to go for the win, but the smart play was hitting Toney wide open toward the middle.

Agree, he should not have thrown it. The likely reason he did throw it was he read it as base cover 2 and did not think that CB was gonna drop back 40 yards. Reading defenses in real time at field level is parts science and art. I think he saw a shot at a hero throw and made his choice as soon as he saw what he thought he was seeing. I’d love to hear if that was the call by the Indiana defense or if they gave the CB some latitude based on what happened on his side of the field.

This article brushes some of what they do. I imagine a lot of DCs are watching this film and looking to emulate next season. I bet this complex stuff is harder for younger players to learn. Indiana having a lot of older players likely helped.
