Sounding like Thad Matta rumors are gaining steam, and that it could happen quickly.

Yup. Matta wants the job if the offer is right

Any concerns on thad's health? That's a bit worrisome I suppose, it'd be a little deflating to get a grand slam hire like matta and have him building us up then he's gone in 2 years to retire for good then we're back to square one.

I know that's an issue but hopefully we've done the proper legwork on it. Plus you know that would something used against him on the recruiting trail. Speaking of which, does he have any familiarity with recruiting Georgia or the South in general?

Coach K had had something similar sat out a year in 1990s and has been good to go.

Not sure, I know he's never coached in the south.
I don't think that'd be a big deal though, his reputation speaks for itself so I doubt he'd have too hard of a time recruiting. He would do himself a massive favor by keeping jonas.

I would THINK, in my uneducated opinion, that crean or matta would easily be able to keep hagans simply because of their resumes. Not sure why hagans liked fox so much, but if he was willing to commite to UGA and fox it'd seem a no brainer to commit to UGA and crean/matta. And man we would be exciting with hagans.

I have no idea how coaching transitions work, how does this happen exactly? Like does someone in the admin tell the new guy "hey, you're really gonna wanna keep coach [x] because xyz". Or does the new coach just come and meet with everyone and coach x is like "hey here's what I've done, you really need to keep me". I guess what I'm ultimately saying, since a new coach is going to have a good idea of guys they like and want to bring in...is does a new coach already have an idea of a certain coach or 2 that they likely need to keep? And if so how do they know this

He kept his job for so long thanks to a weak sec though, so he was more fortunate than otherwise. This was his chance to prove that idea wrong and he didn't
The SEC has traditionally been weak depth wise when it comes to hoops. There are usually one or two really good teams, a few good teams and a lot of average teams. That is the way it has been. This year, there are 8 really good SEC teams. That’s not normal nor has it ever been.

quote:Generally speaking I feel like in most coaching changes there are always a couple of assistant coaches who get retained. As for how that is decided I imagine it is a mix of their own research with a little help from people close to the program they're about to take over, and probably an interview with those they're interested in keeping. I imagine that most anybody familiar with the program who Thad talks with would bring up the fact that Jonas is an excellent recruiter and guy the players like.

With Jonas being the only black coach on staff his chances of returning are greatly increased. I say this due to the fact that he can look most recruits in the eye and honestly say I understand your struggle.
Also his brother is a travel ball coach and he is Alumni. The. Throw in his track record with developing bigs with crap to work with. It’s all up to Jonas if he stays. I can guarantee you he will be given the opportunity to stay. Could be a different role but he will def. have the opportunity.

The sec had been abnormally dreadful for most of fox's tenure. He would have lost his job much sooner with this sec.

The SEC has been a football conference with a few good BBall teams since forever. You can bullshite some of the dudes on here, but I’m old enough to have lived it sir/m’am
I don’t know the answer, but how many years has the SEC gotten 8 teams in? Can’t imagine it’s too many.

This is the first year the league has gotten 8. SEC basketball is rapidly improving. Impressive list of coaches in the league, schools recruiting at a higher level. Majority of the teams feel better about their roster next year than they do this season.

I'm all in on Thad Matta. Would be fine with Crean or Hurley. Matta is a helluva coach. Things got a little stale at the end of his time in Columbus. Same thing happened with Barnes in Austin. He's been great for Tennessee. Think Matta could be the same for us.
