Ted Turner, the media maverick and philanthropist who founded CNN, a pioneering 24-hour network that revolutionized television news, died peacefully Wednesday, surrounded by his family, according to a news release from Turner Enterprises. He was 87.
The Ohio-born Atlanta businessman, nicknamed “The Mouth of the South” for his outspoken nature, built a media empire that encompassed cable’s first superstation and popular channels for movies and cartoons, plus professional sports teams like the Atlanta Braves.
Turner was also an internationally known yachtsman; a philanthropist who founded the United Nations Foundation; an activist who sought the worldwide elimination of nuclear weapons; and a conservationist who became one of the foremost landowners in the United States. He played a crucial role in reintroducing bison to the American west. He even created the Captain Planet cartoon to educate kids about the environment.
RIP

He was the GOAT and what I’d like to think I’d be like with a few billion.

He donated tons of money to the UN so I do not see him as a GOAT. Maybe a goat.

I don’t agree with his politics but don’t care. He bought the Braves and an island…good by me.

My only gripe with him was that ill-fated dalliance with established traitor to the US, Jane Fonda.

GOAT
No one who marries Jane Fonda is a GOAT. I'll give him the Braves and TBS, but Hanoi Jane is a deal breaker.

I didn't know he made Captain Planet.
Reintroduced bison to the west.
Made the braves a powerhouse and America's team
Awesome life

One of my good friends dad was an executive with TBS prior to their merger with AOL. A couple funny stories he told me:
They were riding in an elevator to meet with all the other executives about the upcoming Time Warner - AOL merger. As they're stepping off, getting ready to address everyone, Ted turns and say, 'I can't wait to check out the internet and look at porn.'
His dad would come in around 4am to TBS studios to get work done. No one is there when from down the hall he hears what he say sounds like the voice God speaking to him. He looks out his door and it Ted Turner and Charlton Heston in their pajamas, drunk, and arguing with each other.

His bio reads like a made for TV movie. I especially like him challenging Rupert Murdoch to two fist fights.

I've heard this from more than one person who was in the room:
UGA invited Turner to speak at graduation. Later that day, he was in Dr. Adams' office writing a check for a $1 million donation. Dr. Adams said, "Why don't you make it $2 millions?".
Tuner closed his checkbook and walked out.

Ted Turner used to have wet t-shirt contests on college night at Braves games.

Is being married for 10 years considered a dalliance?
Also, thank you for providing me my word of the day.

Met him once, at Teds in the basement of where his penthouse was over by the Tabernacle. Interesting character but embodied the spirit that makes America great.

yah, he was a great businessman. In this day and age where a lot of business leaders are only worried about shareholder value it's great to reflect on his legacy. His products brought a lot of enjoyment and value to people. The Braves were terrible most of his tenure but I and many people loved them.

Funny thing heard was from my brother’s friend who worked on his quail plantation in Albany. He said Ted didn’t own a cell phone but was always borrowing everyone’s phone around him to make calls.
