Miss State and Cincinnati (especially the former in JT’s first appearance) really sold out on the run which led to his most productive passing games.

Clemson hasn’t lost many games over the last several years, but in that timeframe they haven’t lost to statue passers. JT last season, limited in his capabilities, was mostly a statue.

Even if he is, I have full trust in the guy to lead his team to a win because of his work ethic and confidence.

I'm just hoping that every 1st down play isn't a run up the middle.

On 2020 first down rushing plays we had 12 TDs and made 23 1st downs, on 185 attempts. 4.78 yards per play. Doesn't sound bad to me.

Sucks about Pickens, I hope JD's rope-a-dope prediction is real. With him we are NC caliber.

Sure we have other good receivers, but they aren't Pickens.

I love Kearis Jackson but he's so much more effective when Pickens is also on the field.

I agree but I think Burton will fill Pickens shoes and Jackson will be able to be effectively used who know what rosemy- Jacksaint DRob smith and if what we saw from Mitchell is the real deal throw him in there as well

Burton can absolutely do more routes than pickens.
I think we have several guys capable of taking off the top of a defense (burton, smith, robertson, washington, and cook).

The key question is who will JTs bailout guy be when a blitz gets missed or a lineman fails to do his job.
It is not popular to say this but Speed and Smith both should have had interceptions on JT Saturday. Both reps had pressure get through. And the defense was playing a day 1 install. Nothing fancy.

This.

JT quote: "When you throw a 50/50 ball to George, it's really an 80/20 ball"

What Mike Evans was for Johnny Football, Pickens was for JTD.

We have some good receivers, but I don't know that we have a replacement for that. I hope we do, but those are big shoes to fill.

Seeing JTD go 324 68% and 3TD's vs our Defensive 1's is highly encouraging, but I'd feel a lot better with Pickens on the field. A lot better.

Checkdown to Cook or Washington, ideally.

Burton showed an insane amount of talent last year, especially against Mississippi State. I have a feeling he's going to step up in a big way.

Checkdowns to the backs arent always available that quick (chipping, staying in to block, etc..)
We had some passes to the backs on saturday where the pass was thrown before they got their head around.

Washington could be that security blanket.
It will be interesting to see how defenses defend him. Press man could be a losing proposition for a defense (see Lovasea Carroll falling down concussed after getting hit on top of the helmet from Washington's swim move). Or it could tie him up and make him unavailable for quick throws (not separating on the snap).

And when are we gonna stop talking about cook like he's a super star?

[let the downvotes rain down upon me]

It looks like we have finally an OC who knows how to use Cook. Monken schemed up plays specifically designed to get him singled up against linebackers out of the backfield, and it was lethal.

cook

He is a good hybrid RB/WR.
Huge mismatch against linebackers.
And he actually improved in 2020 making the first man miss.
He was 2nd on the team in yards per game (rushing + receptions) behind zeus.

He isnt a superstar off of 2020.
But year 2 with monken and daniels???

How many yards per game does he need for a season to be a superstar?

He's a solid weapon in the arsenal, im not saying he sucks. But he does get the superstar talk often. It isn't warranted.

We don't have anyone who can cover Ross. That dude could easily put 200+ yards and 3 TDs on us if he's healthy again.

His best year was is Freshman year. He was also blanketed with other elite talent around him. This ClemPson team will not be anywhere close to that team. They’re a year away imo.
