So I’ve spent pretty much zero time in Athens in the last decade aside from going to games and maybe a tailgate or two. Going to spend some time in Athens for a couple of days and curious of what’s new to check out.

I've always wanted to do one of those history tours put on by the Athens Historical Society or whatever they call themselves.
Every weekend there is some kind of open market thing going on in the Summer, it's fun to walk around and hock loogies on random lesbians.

I am a little worried about downtown. It's been stagnant for a while now. Online shopping has hurt retail and college kids don't hang out at bars and don't drink alcohol as much as they used to in general. I don't see how a lot of these bars are going to make it.
I was up there on a Tuesday night a few months ago, and we left dinner at Depalmas around 10 and walked back to Hotel Indigo. There were so few people downtown that it actually felt a little skethy. The only people on the streets were hobos and bouncers, and the restaurants and bars were empty.
On another note, riding along Milledge Avenue at 4:30 when all the co-eds are jogging and exercising is like Disney World for dudes. Never in my life!

Like Eddie Money said, I want to Go back and do it all over ...
Would not swap my youth with the current youth.

Tuesday night the streets weren't packed with party animals?
Damn, close the lid on the coffin and bury it deep and far away.

To be fair, that wasn’t uncommon 12 years ago either when I lived downtown

Night life doesn’t start until at least 11 in Athens. They’re all still primping or pregaming at 10. Monday and Tuesday in the Spring also aren’t big nights - Thursday-Saturday are when most come out. In the Fall there’s a lot more activity because 1) school year is still new and 2) weather is way better for going out.
Kids still hit downtown just as hard as they ever have before, we’re all just too old to stay up late enough to see it happen

Downtown is virtually the same as 30 years ago imo. Just more coffee shops and retail.
Actually more alive as thousands of apartments are now downtown versus spread all over Athens.

Yes sir. Was at UGA back in the 90s and it was the same.
Every year my son (and sometimes my daughter) go to a home game. A couple of years ago we went to the Ole Miss night game. He was 14 at the time and his eyes were opened big time. I guess the theme is leather mini skirts - when I was there it was sundresses.
However, the best was when we were downtown checking out the stores and all before heading into the stadium - we were at the college and clayton when we started hearing cat calls from from the girls. My son looked up and in an upstairs apartment (I guess it was) on the corner of college and clayton. Looking up were 3 very drunk girls sitting on the planter. My son goes "I think they are are talking to you, Dad." Damned if they weren't. If he werent there

DT will be just fine with all of the housing that's been built and what's in the works. They'll be adding another 2,000 more beds where the Foundry hotel is currently. There will be fewer bars, but they'll be replaced with retail that caters to everyday items. The county is also trying to move the courthouse into the federal building and replace the parking lot behind it with a park.

That dat of the ol Miss game when we were downtown, my son was like "there are so many bars."
He did like all of the little shops and did not believe me when I described the record store on Clayton that's been there forever - used to trade CDs there back in the 90s - until we went in it. Just like it was back then. There was a record player setup for sale and he was like what was that?
On the way home he told me he wanted to go to UGA - he's been a Dawg fan ever since he was little, but downtown and when I showed him around part of the campus it really kicked in

Bring a pencil, grab a coffee or tea (or an alcoholic beverage tee hee hee!) at Walker's and pick up a Flagpole Magazine to work the word search sponsored by the local sex shop with words such as Dildo and Ball Gag, right next to the legitimate crossword puzzle.

Back in the mid nineties I lived in the loft above Flanagan’s and Half Moon Pub for 2 years. Sunday thru Wednesday nights DT were always kind of slow. Sure, bars were open but were always about 1/4 or 1/3 full as they were Thursday-Saturday nights. Pretty chill and I learned to enjoy it as I got to get to know bar and restaurant staff with not so many people there. I worked at Uptown Lounge in those days and it was the hot spot from 93-95. Even we were pretty slow Monday- Wednesday. Thursday much busier and Friday and Saturday completely shoulder to shoulder packed. We had so many bars back then though. Roadhouse, Nowhere Bar, Uptown Lounge, City Bar, Mean Mike’s, Engine Room, 40 Watt, Washington Street Tavern, The Atomic, Lulus Bait Shack, Rum Runners, Peppinos, DTs Down Under, Ratskellar, High Hat, East-West, The Winery, The Globe, Half Moon Pub, Flanagans, Compadres, Last Resort Grill, Gus Garcias, Skys Place and probably a few I am forgetting.
The Friday and Saturday nights I stay there now almost 30 years later still seem very busy but maybe not as wild as it was in the early to mid 90s.

Were you the roommate of the crazy guy throwing shite out the window one night? Cops and everything.

Roadhouse is still there and exactly the same as it was 30 years ago sans cigarette smoke

That's most likely your problem. When I was in school we only ever went downtown before midnight if there was a social and even those started at 11pm. Some people would go to powerhour but downtown never really got slammed until later.

Damn, I had forgotten most of those bars from back then. I never thought of looking for a loft - I might not have made it out of school if I did
I can't answer for the crowds anymore, the only time we have been there at night was for games, and that last was Ol miss a couple years ago. And it was crazy crowded with a ton of people hanging outside one of the bars. Man my son was having a hard time keeping his eyes straight.

We may or may not have had the cops called on us for an incident involving a potato gun at Town club off of springdale

That was roughly my era and we had a blast. Fishbowls at Lulu's and nickle night at Lowry's were fun. Spent most of my time at Uptown.

My mom lives up there. There's still some remnants of old Athens like Little Italy, Wuxtry, YoYo records, 40 Watt, Ga theater, and Last Resort, but it's a totally different vibe up there now. Lot of homeless people seem to camp out across from where DT's Down under was and of course hang out at College square. I had some experiences with some aggressive homeless people last winter.
