ATHENS, Ga. — The Athens-Clarke Police Department said a driver is dead after their vehicle plowed into a popular bar downtown, resulting in major damage to the building.
Police said the incident occurred at Magnolias Bar, located at the intersection of E. Broad Street and Jackson Street in downtown Athens.
According to police, officers responded to a suicidal male and initiated contact in downtown Athens, but the man fled. Police said officers did not pursue. Later, police said the man's vehicle hit a building on the corner of S. Jackson Street and East Broad Street. According to police, the driver was found dead at the scene.
Police identified the victim as 46-year-old Kevin Cissner. A source tells 11Alive's Cody Alcorn that the victim was an EMS employee in Greene County.
Photos from Athens-Clarke Police show what appears to be a pickup truck inside the bar with debris from the building in the bed of the truck. Part of the building is also gone in the photos.
Athens Police are informing drivers to avoid East Broad Street from Lumpkin Street to Thomas Street and Jackson Street between Clayton Street and South Street and surrounding side streets. The area will be closed for an extended period, but officers did not provide a timeframe for when it will reopen.
"Engineers are working to determine the building's structural integrity," police said.
The bar posted this statement on its Instagram account following the tragic incident:
"We are saddened by the events that occurred early this morning. We are praying for the driver and their family. Please keep the family, Magnolias employees, and any other business affected in your mind during this time.
Thank you to our community for all of this support. We love our Magnolias family?? We will keep everyone updated whenever we know anything else."

Lib policing
Why would they let him flee the scene and not pursue?

If they did pursue him and he wrecked and killed someone, you’d blame them for the death

I mean maybe, depends on if they fricked up the chase.
Wonder how much budget the ACCUG spends on police and equipment. They are professionals and paid well. Do your fricking job.

This. A pursuit through downtown Athens with all of that pedestrian traffic is just asking for a college student to get run over.

What was that place called in early 90s?

I think it was still a Frigidaire store.

Wasn’t it Tasty World at some point?

I think it was a bar with live music and an Italian spot at some point, but I am at a loss what it was back in 80s and 90s. Maybe it was empty. Drawing a blank.

Per Google, Tasty World shut down in 2009 and was remodeled with the downstairs becoming Magnolia's and the upstairs becoming Tasty World Uptown. Eventually, the Tasty World name was dropped altogether.

I must be confusing it with another building on that side. It was the Athens Appliance store/Frigidaire building as someone said. Things have changed so much it is hard to picture the old places. Sigh

yah, I don't think it was a bar in the early 90's. The only bar on that side I remember was Gus Garcias. It was Tasty World in the late 90's and early 00's.

I've never been inside there. Was it good?

That sorry motherfricker put the public in danger and most likely destroyed a historic building just to kill himself?!

Apparently the local vigilante pedo hunters had made contact with him or set him up. Played a role per the Athens reddit....which is...a special place, my word.
Lambert dawg would love it in there.
