I'm not so much into perfect voices anyway.

Best female song-writer (Living), right here………

I still enjoy listening to Natalie Merchant - her sound calms my soul.

The MTV Unplugged of 10,000 Maniacs remains a favorite.

I do like Lucinda Williams, but I'd have to cast my vote for Joni Mitchell. She has so many great songs that it's hard to pick one, but anything on the Hejira album would be a good place to start.

I agree with Alison Krauss. She has an amazing voice.
Down to the River to Pray

Unpopular opinion: Whitney Houston. Before she went off the rails, she had a serious vocal gift.

Allison Crowe's "Hallelujah" is fricking awesome.

Lana del Ray isn't bad, either.

Amy Lee

So my response will not be very popular, but rather than range, I like a unique sound. My favorite female vocalists are: Karen Carpenter, Jewel, Aimee Mann.

A lot of people will laugh at this one because of the style of music they did, but she is one of my all time favorites. Very unique voice that chose music to fit her voice perfectly. Clean, clear sound. Nobody had to cover her voice by playing music loudly or autotuning her.

This is an amazing back-stage impromptu rendition of Wild Heart by Stevie Nicks and her backup vocalist. It's keen insight into just how talented Stevie is. Such a strong clear voice and she was always easy on the eyes.

If you like a screamer in bed, Brody Dalle

A pretty great contemporary voice (not on the underwood/krause level, but about a rung below), Sia

And in my boyhood crush category, Susannah Hoffs. This is less about her voice and more about my desire to knock her sideways into next week.

I used to see the Soul Miner's Daughter and the Jennifer Nettles Band a lot back in my youth. Great live performer.
