In front of you are two doors. One leads to gold and everlasting youth. The other door leads to instant death.
Each door is manned by a porter.
One always lies, one always tells the truth.
But you don't know which one is which.
With one question, how can you find out which door to enter?

Ask either porter which door the other porter would suggest. Then pick the opposite door from his answer. If you are talking to the truth porter he'll be telling you what the lie is. If you are talking to the liar porter he'll be lying. So opposite of the answer will always lead to gold and youth.

Can I just put the back of my hands on one of the doorknobs to see if it's hot?

30 white horses on a pink hill. They chomp, they stomp, then they stand still.

To some extent, it doesn't matter - if you pick wrong, you'll never know it.
But ask the porter which door the other porter would tell you to pick.

You ask one what the other one will say...
It will always be a lie.
That may blow your mind but let me give an example...
Say you go up to the first porter and ask "What would the other porter tell me is behind this door?" He'll then reply with either "It Is Behind or isn't.." Now let's say he is the honest one, then he will be saying the liar will lie to you and say this... If it is the liar you ask then he will reply with the EXACT SAME ANSWER, because he cannot tell the truth
Therefore the honest porter will tell you the lying porter's answer, and the lying porter will keep the same answer because he cannot be honest and state what the honest porter would say.
Basically
Asking an honest man about a liar: He'll basically state "He will lie to you"
Asking a liar about an honest man: He'll basically state "He will lie to you"
Therefore making 2 porters into one since they will have the same exact answer of a lie... putting the honest man in the liar's shoes.
It will always be a lie.
