OT: Computer Geek Advice Needed

I realize this is the GA board and not the OT board, but I trust most of you. My computer (only about 4 years old) has suddenly started going really slow with the internet, IE or Chrome. I have another computer that works fine with the WiFi, so I don't think that is the problem. I have run Malwarebytes and Defrag software, but no luck. I think it may have something to do with plugins, but I have disabled most of them. Before I shell out bucks to take it to a PC Doctor, I thought I would see if any of you have suggestions.

1...Just for the hell of it, try system restore to a past date when it was running right, see if that helps. If it runs better maybe you can narrow it down to what the prob. is... If the computer won't let you do system restore you have a virus for sure...

Download and run CCleaner Free.

Run Windows Task Manager/Performance/Resource Monitor and check CPU tab to see what's taking up CPU usage. You may find a rogue process or program you can kill.

Do the same with the Memory and Disk tabs.

Thanks all. The oldest date I had for restore was mid December, so it didn't help. I am trying the cccleaner now, but I think I have tried it before. I think it is more of a plugin problem than a virus. I get shockwave crashes occasionally and the site is really slow with pictures.

I repeated the question on the Tech board.

Have any of you tried these PC Doctors? Are they legit?

This will sound dumb, but have you updated all of your plugins? Java, Flash, etc?

I got spoiled with my Mac at home and forget to update plugins constantly at work.

The first step on the road to a solution is properly defining the problem. You say that all of your browsers are slow but do you mean that your internet connection is slow or that the browsers are opening or closing slowly.

If the problem is slow internet go to speedtest.net and run a test when there are no other applications or machines on your network eating bandwidth. Are you getting the speed that your ISP promises?

Is the problem a slow computer not the internet? The following is a copy of an email that I sent to a friend who had a slow Vista machine.

There are a number of problems that could cause slow performance.

1) You probably have a large number of unneeded programs loading into memory at startup. Look down in the System Tray bottom left and see if you have many icons showing things loaded at startup. You should disable as many as possible to free up resources. Right click on each icon and see if there is an option to disable, If there isn't that option open the program that the icon refers to and try to find an option to disable loading at startup. Some startup items offer no convenient option to disable but the program Autoruns provides the needed control. Download the attached file Program Folder.zip then right click on that file to extract the contents which are two folders, Autoruns and Process Explorer. Copy the Autoruns folder and the Process Explorer Folder to your Program Files folder. Open the Autoruns folder nested inside the Program Files folder and right click on the Autoruns.exe file and choose Send shortcut to Desktop. From the desktop click the Autoruns shortcut, accept the license and open the program. Click on the Logon tab and you will see all of the items that are loaded at startup. You can uncheck items under the Logon tab and they will no longer load when you boot the computer. Right clicking on any item will open a menu where one of the options is to search online to find information to help determine whether the item is desirable or unneeded. I've attached a screenshot of my Autoruns Logon tab entries so you can see my disabled and allowed startup items.

2) The disk could be fragmented. This is probably not the problem because Vista is usually set to auto defrag. Open the defrag program and rather than running a defrag run a check to see how fragmented the drive is.

3) Accumulated junk files and junk registry entries. Download and install Ccleaner. The Ccleaner installer is usually pretty good but every time you run any installer you should always run a custom install (if offered) so you can deselect undesirable options. On installation do have the program scan for cookies to keep. Reboot the computer and run Ccleaner. In the left hand pane you will see the types of junk files that are removed for both Windows and, if you click on it, Applications. Click the "analyze" button down on the bottom of your screen and the program will run a scan to find junk files. Next click "Run Cleaner" on the right bottom to get rid of the junk files.

Ccleaner also deletes junk registry entries. Click on the "registry" button in the left pain and then click "scan for issues" After the scan runs click "fix selected issues" to remove the entries. I always accept the option to save the deleted entries for safety but I've never needed the saved file. After the registry part has been run, reboot the computer.

3) After the above your computer might still be running slow. Some program or process might be eating up a lot of resources like memory or cpu cycles. Process Explorer is the program that. Open your Program Files folder then open the Process Explorer folder you put there in step 1. Right click on the file Process Explorer.exe and send to desktop shortcut. Go to the desktop and click on the Process Explorer shortcut, accept the license and open the program. The Process Explorer program shows every running process along with the resources that that process consumes. Right after booting look for processes that are consuming a large percent of the CPU or memory. If you find a process that is eating a lot of resources, call me and we will try to figure out what is going on.

Do you have any info about the computer? Processor type, amount of RAM, free hard disk space, operating system version?

I'm guessing it has a traditional hard drive and not a solid state drive?

Ok, Thanks so far. CCcleaner seemed to help for a while but it didn't last. It is an Asus laptop with Windows 7. I will check when I get home to see what else I can find. Everything is fast except the internet. It is not the connection as the connection works fine with other computers. The internet drags with the spinning arrow at the top. It seems the longer I am browsing, the slower it gets.

Not a computer nerd, but check task manager performance tab and see how much of your memory capacity is being used. If it's maxed out, adding a bigger memory card might speed things up.

Also, if CCCleaner worked for a while, try clearing your cache on a regular basis (Control + Shift + Delete when the browser window is open). It's a minor pain to relog in to sites, but if it makes a difference it might be worth it (try without deleting the cookies too).

I use two browsers. When I use Internet explorer, I have it set so that everything runs in high security protected mode (set via internet options >> security tab, and I also restrict all cookies. The viewing experience is impacted because javascript is blocked, but it makes browsing quicker and safer and I don't get annoying videos etc.

When I want other functionality on sites I trust, I use Google Chrome and have specific settings for each site depending on what I want. You can set plugins as "Click to run", block images, etc., for each individual site.

It's just the internet and it seems to be mostly when there is a picture, graphic or video. However, it gets slower and slower. When I type a search in Google, the line up top shows a whole bunch of things...my search words, google, some jumbled letters, etc. Really slow to load a page or do a search.

Are you experiencing these problems in multiple browsers? Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 10+? Or is it occurring in a single browser?

Are you connecting via wifi? If so try a wired connection to your router.

If slow wifi is the problem there are ways to improve throughput. Download and install the free program Inssider 3.x to see if there are wifi problems. The program gives you a graphical display of your wifi signal strength along with other wifi signals in your area. You may have interference with other wifi signals. If there is overlap with other networks you can change wifi channels on the router setup to select a better channel. Inssider will show the channels and you will be able to see where there is minimal overlap.

Run a ping -t to www.google.com and watch it when it's slow. If you are dropping alot of pings it could be wireless interference or bad internet. Typically this is an issue with the modem but you never know.

I would say that most issues are a result of viruses and spyware. You could try AVG or Lavasoft, CC Cleaner, Malware bytes or any of the standard free spyware removal tools but you have to run them constantly. Scans are a daily routine for me.

click the little windows icon in the bottom left. Once it pops up. In the search box type cmd. This will bring up a command prompt. This will bring up a black box. In that black box type in


ping -t www.google.com

what this does is sends a constant ping to google or a constant connectivity test. What you are looking for is replys. If you are getting non replys then you are dropping packets which signfies a connection problem between you and your ISP. It will look like this if you have problems.



It will look like this if you are good.



Just a quick example. Here is an example of the command being input from my computer.




What you want to get replys and you also want those reply's to be in a good MS time. If you are getting over 300ms then that could explain the severe amounts of lag as well.
