Heard from my kid in Athens that Ort is not doing well. He is an odd dude, but always was fun to speak with over a beer. Very kind and well read person. Prayers for him.

There's no real describing Ort. You'd just have to know him.

Vox-

If James Brown is The Godfather of Soul, then William Ort Carlton is The Godfather of Athens Townies.

Another way to put it...

If a townie had a beer with Mike Mills and Ort, he'd say "you'll never guess who I had a beer with today... Ort!"

RIP Ort. I was in Athens from 90-95 and he was always downtown hanging out in front of the Georgia Theater or 40 Watt. The first time I met him I was with one of my eccentric friends who was really into music but looked like a frat guy. He went up to talk to Ort and wanted to get insight on Athens Inside out. Ort kind of looked at him and said "it's half past the hour of frat boys" like he wasn't cool enough to talk to him. I talked to him later on from time to time and he was a bit friendlier. He always had an interesting perspective.

Once he became a local celeb, he didn't like being hounded. He's the kind of guy you just sit down next to, order your beer, and wait for him to start talking. And he would. He's a talker. If you sit down and say "You're Ort! Tell me a story!" he would dismiss you.

LOL. He did that to me once. I took my grandmother to lunch at the old Normaltown Cafe and we ran into Ort. They had known each other for some time so we all ate together. Fast forward a couple years and I run into Ort at Trapeze. I said hi and mentioned that he knew my grandmother. He said, 'I know' and went back to his beer.

yah, Ort may have had Asperger's syndrome. He had a genius amount of knowledge of random things like beer but had a lot of social awkwardness. I liked his parts in Athens Inside/Out.

He lived and died on his own terms and didn't give a frick. That, alone, should be statue worthy. Even if he was a commie.

He traveled, drank a lot of good beer, read books, had great stories, strangers knew him. Sounds like a fine life to me.

Ort - Online Athens

This is a good article on Ort. I think as much as anything he symbolized the quirky little college town Athens was and what has been IMO fading away. It's cool that he is being eulogized. I really enjoyed that era of Athens. I go back now and there are some remnants, but it's not the same. I also saw where Ort had a photographic memory and remembered the entire Athens phone book at one point; quite the definition of idiot savant.
