In years past we have went head to head with Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee for recruits. This year we are competing with SC for more recruits then we are with our traditional recruiting rivalries. Thoughts on why?

Maybe Vann, Tindall, and Sandidge?

I still feel like we’re in a bunch of Auburn battles though. And obviously Bama as well.

We still have big battles every year with Auburn. Heck, we're in the middle of a couple right now.

Tennessee and Florida just aren't great recruiting programs like they used to be anymore. Now our battles are usually with Clemson and FSU.

Doesn't seem to me an abnormally high amount to me.

McClendon gets his teeth into one GA WR, and then UGA going after two of their local guys.

I imagine that we're going to see more Bama/OSU/Mich/USC/Penn State type national fights as much as we have the regional tussles with Auburn/Tennessee/Florida.

We are recruiting higher tier prospects than usually so now we fight more nationally than regionally

ETA: pretty much what Vox just said

We battled AU for Fields and we're still battling them for a few players like Hill.

I don't think Auburn, Tenn, SC or Clemson can be competitive if they don't have some success in Georgia. Collectively they will always have some battles.

To be fair, the state of Georgia produces 250+ kids that go on to FBS-level schools. If our recruiting class were made up exclusively of Georgia natives, there would still be 10 kids left for every one UGA takes.

The "Building a Fence around the State" argument is great in theory, and as the top of the food chain for GA universities, all of the best kids *should* end up in Athens, but at the end of the day, you can't overcome those prima donnas who either A) buy the snake oil that the Butch Joneses of the world are selling, or B) want to get out of the state at whatever cost.

Clemson recruits Atlanta and North and East Georgia. Auburn has success in West and South Georgia. Bama hits Atlanta a lot.

So this would be my guess...Kirby being the son of a GA High School coach probably gives him a network to more GA schools/kids than any of us could imagine. That gives us a better shot with the top tier of the state.

As for South Carolina, I'd bet with Kirby and Will Muschamp probably SE many of the same things when they evaluate recruits. Esp knowing how much they've worked together and the fact that they are both defensive coaches.

It really looks like Saban has developed some sort of formula for recruiting kids away from the stars.
