I clearly remember Wendy's at one point being a slight notch above "fast food". It was the only one where you didn't have to throw your own trash away when you were done because they had a paid employee there waiting to do it for you and to clean off the table for the next person.

ANother things that's weird though, is how once a fast food chain gets off the ground, it never dies. Have you noticed that?

Theyre like government programs and roaches. Name one that hasn't survived in some form once franchised.

Fast food chains that went out of business

All American Burger
Burger Chef - had the scarce that might have been loaded with coacine to make you crave it
Burger Queen - they had really good potato wedges
Druthers - John Y Brows failure after KFC
Wimpy's
Shrimp Boats
GD Ritzy's - a Wendy's spin off
Jerry's

Some are near dead like
Uncle Bud's - think Nashville has the last store
Godfather's Pizza - Dominos eroded their base
Shoney's - once a thriving chain, now few left
Ho Jo's - hard to find them now

I'm impressed with that reference. Up vote for the 5th turning from a member of the Nomad generation.

Wendy's had the first drive through that I can remember too....as well as the potato and salad bar.

Edit: they also had the pump your own ketchup deal which was light years ahead of having to beg for those packs. Dave was the Steve Jobs of fast food.

I pointed it before, but I guess I have to point it out again..... Quoting the company's own friggin CEO for an explanation on why his company failed at something is idiotic. That's like asking a politician why his such and such program failed. Tarzan now see? This is about the new Colonel impersonator campaign tanking and changing course anyway. Not how the CEO can spin something for the shitheads at a "New York Strategic Decisions Conference". Someone should use their google to find out what the Darrel Hammond guy says about being fired as the Colonel. And whether he was told there'd be alternating Colonels or if he was hired to be the new long term Colonel. Hmmmmm....

feel free to post the article explaining the failure, and if you did and I missed it, post it again

Or maybe go find it yourself. Or I don't care

This is a thread for people that can carry their own weight and keep up. And contribute. Not one where we hold Tarzan's hand and , as a consequence, dumb the whole class down.

Agree. The ketchup keg was huge. And yellow napkins were pioneering too.

I remember Godfathers and SHoneys. And there was a Shrimp Boats on Baxter Street in Athens at one time. None of these or the rest on your list are fast food though, idont thing, are they?

I'm pretty sure that once a fast food chain reaches widespread franchise level, it can't be killed. It becomes immortal.

Might depend on how old you are. I think you would have to be cognizant in the 50's, 60's, or 70's to remember them. Thy were competitors to say Long John Silvers and Captain D's today. While they did have sit down they had the fast food feel. If you recognize this building you might have an ideal of what the chain buildings looked like. It may be an auto lot today but it looks like it was built for the chain when they were still in business.

Gotcha. I was born in '80, so totally possible there was one on Baxter.

Check out the giant tubs of mashed potatoes and gravy that the Commander in Chief is about to dominate. That's impressive.

Who the hell eats fried chicken with a fork and knife though?

Picture isn't showing on my end (could be me), but I'm sure John Kasich probably does that, too.

Maybe he plans on tweeting while he eats and doesn't want to grease his phone up. That little fold-up to-go napkin thing they give you is basically useless for the job its given. Might as well be made of notebook paper.

Godfathers

Was one of the first pizza chains to deliver pizza in 1950's cadillac hearse painted bright yellow. In the late 70's and early 80's I think the hearse was not longer politically correct and with the gas spikes of the 70's probably much more expensive to fuel up. Dominoes came on the scene and had the more efficient Ford Escorts and that was the end of Godfather's as a fast food chain.

Shoneys

Shoneys was the parent in Tennessee

Jerrico was the parent in Kentucky

Shoneys has Captain D's and Jerrico had Long John Silvers
Shoneys had Shoneys and Jerrico had Jerry's
Shoney had Lee's Chicken and Jerrico had Fazolis

As for the actual Shoney's and Jerry's they started out as the "Parkette" model where you pulled your car in and ate in your car. Sonic is a survivor of this model and pretty sure you would call Sonic a "fast food" operation. Later on Shoney's and Jerry's move to more family restaurant model like the current Denny's.

Shoneys also had 5th Quarter (steak house), Sailmaker, Barbwire, and Pargo's but seems the 5th Quarter was the only one with significant stores before Shoney's filed for bankruptcy in 2000.

Chi Chi's was a mexican chain founded in 1975 and went defunct in 2004. I think they still sell the sauces in grocery stores but have not seen a food joint in awhile. A good case of food borne illness is a good way to kill of a chain as a Hep A breakout in 2003. Outback bought the choice locations and built their chain on the real estate but not anything else.

I remember Godfathers. I went to a friend's birthday party at one when I was a kid and they gave us all a tour of the kitchen and the big freezer where all the ingredients are kept.

Chichis was a restaurant too though. It's the fast food ones that can't be killed once widespread franchisement occurs. There's even some Hardees is still around. And they don't even try.

Actually, there's one in Athens, one in Danielsville, and one in Winder. That's just what I know of for sure. Oh, and Commerce.

Right. That's what I said. Hardees is still around and they don't even try. No chain has ever given less of a frick than Hardees.
