Does it help that Chaney coached a Pitt team that played and beat UNC last year?

Chaney did a good job with that roster last season. We have more talent and I have a good feeling we will get more offensive production this season. I know UNC is a good team and Fedora is a great coach. He always seems to do better the more accustomed his players get to his offense. Its going to be a dogfight but it has to help Chaney all ready game planned and studied their offense last season.

That could be why they lost. He should have studied their defense.

I'm going to be pretty pissed if we don't run it at least 40 times against UNC. That should be the biggest no brainer game plan.

I tend to agree, but I don't think it's that simple.

For starters, it would be virtually impossible for them to replicate the bowl game's ineptness at stopping the run. Giving up 600+ yards is an anomoly, I know we should be successful knowing that but that was 8 months ago, for all we know they come out with renewed vigor and put 8 in teh box every time.

Also of concern is that we won't have Sony at all (likely), Chubb coming off the knee who shoudl play but we have no clue how effective he'll be. So let's "ease" him in so to speak and give him 10 carries. We've still got 20+ carries to give some combo of Holyfield (great potential, never played a down), Herrien (less potential, never played a down), Wilson (just recently moved to RB, never taken a snap there in a game) and Douglas (eeehhh).

I agree we should lean on the run especially with our QB situation but that doesnt' mean that we're going to run for 600 yards.

I actually think Sony will play, even if it's in a cast.

Imagine if Chaney really is a great O line coach and we have great run blocking with our RBs and our history as RBU. This could be awesome.

ETA. I meant Pittman. Wrong thread.

Chaney lost his 245lb bell cow at RB James Connor last July to leukemia, the young man is in remission and will play for Pitt this yr. He took UT transfer Nathan Peterman and turned him into one of the better QB's in the ACC, I think we have the right man for the job no doubt.

Don't expect to. I just expect to exploit a MAJOR weakness.

I expect Chubb to get 12-15
Holyfield to get 8-10
Douglas 5+
Sony 5+

That puts us at around 35 on the high end. Mix in a few wildcat/end around plays to Mckenzie and that's right where I want us to be running the football.

It could. He can probably speak to tendencies and anything Pit might have noticed from game films. It's hard to say definitively one way or the other. I would say it could help, but it would be minimal.

In fairness the 600 yards was total offense and not rushing. They rushed for 417 (Which is still mind boggling) and passed for another 173 Yards. Plus it was Navy with their funky offense similar to GT.

I didn't mean to jump in here and correct you, WG. Just wanted to be as accurate as we can be.

We're talking about their Baylor game. Baylor ran for 650 yards.

Baylor v. UNC Stats
756 Total Yards for Baylor
645 Rushing Yards for Baylor
This was on a mind boggling 84 attempts - there are teams who don't get 80+ offensive *plays*... (UNC in that game only had 72 it looks like). Even with that number, they still had an YPC average of 7.7.

Baylor's leading rusher in that game rushed for 299. He had only 2 other games where he reached the century mark.

Ah! yes....I saw your response to me in the other thread, and came looking for this one to correct myself.

Thanks for your correction of me....and Sorry for my correction to you, WG. I was wrong.

Yes. I saw that. Looks like Baylor alhad 18 passing attempts? So they ran 102 plays? That is amazing!

Those are two teams that go realllly fast, so yes they will run a lot of plays in a game. Baylor was playing a converted WR at QB because they were actually out of QBs. They ran the same 4-5 plays over and over and over and over....

I'm not putting much faith into what Baylor and that tPOS head coach did to them in a bowl game. Different team, different year.

A couple of years ago, UF ran for over 400 on our defense, yet for some reason Mizzou and Auburn were shut down when they tried running it.

I have no clue how good or bad UNC's defense will be but I'm not going to assume that we're going to run wild on them just because of one matchup from last season.

While 600 yards is an anomaly, their defense averaged 250 rush yards against last season. So it's not like they were stout to begin with going in to the bowl with 3 games where they gave up over 300 yards rushing.

We should absolutely be able to run on them.
