He still doesn't have a full game of experience. How much worse was he than Bennett who has tons?
Maybe he's not that much worse. I don't know. I just know what I've seen during the time he's been in the game and he hasn't been very productive. He's not making great decisions, isn't super accurate, and isn't utilizing his speed very effectively. Perhaps he's not that much worse than Bennett, but Bennett seems to have better command of the offense and perhaps even the playbooks. I don't know for sure, but there's a reason why he's held on to the starting spot over Mathis and based on Mathis' play today, it was clear that Mathis wasn't better.

This is Bennetts ceiling. He's been an interception machine.
He's had some trouble with tipped passed the past few games but he had zero INTs until Alabama when they started piling up. Plus, they haven't really been for poor decisions as much as tipped balls or bad WR routes. It's not like he's consistently making poor decisions on where to throw the ball, which is generally the concern with racking up INTs.

Maybe Mathis is better and just needs some time to grow up a bit and get comfortable. I'm pulling for the kid and hope he is successful, I'm just trying to look at these things from a coach's perspective rather than an emotional fan's perspective.

So fricking stupid.

At this point, the final record this season means absolutely nothing. The only thing that matters is figuring out what you have for next year.
Spoken like someone who has no contract to coach for the University of Georgia.

So you play Bennett for the rest of the year and go 8-2 this year while Alabama and Florida duke it out for a playoff spot. Congratulations. You want a cookie?
No cookie, thanks. I'm speaking about this from what I believe to be the coach's perspective, not a fan's perspective.

Everyone on the site was calling for Mathis to play because the assumption was that he had to be better than Bennett and by extension CKS was an idiot by not playing him. When Mathis got in the game, it because very obvious very fast that there was a reason why Bennett was starting over Mathis.

My point is this: it's easy to second guess the coach from the luxury of your couch. We don't see the practices every day or the meetings in the film rooms. We don't see what the coaches see so I have to give them the benefit of the doubt on these things and can't project my wants and desires on to them because I'm speaking from a place of relative ignorance, just like you are. It's why I'm seeking to understand the game from their perspective rather than from my own.

What if Fromm ( or even Newman) had in fact stayed for this year, but got hurt or got Covid. Who would cover for him then? Seems like we had no plan for a backup.

I think Mathis and/or Beck may have been the backup for Fromm and Daniels the backup for Newman. I have to assume the coaching staff figured Daniels would have been cleared a lot sooner than he was and willing to play. We just seem to not be so lucky with our players leaving or getting hurt. I know many of us thought the Mathis pickup was pretty good and didn't expect him to have to miss a year due to brain surgery. He probably would have been better prepared to play this season without that.

I was under the impression that they didn’t think Daniels would even be eligible. He was more of a 2021 play. Is that wrong?

diddly, I still respect you for putting up with those lunatics on the SECrant, bro. That's a cesspool that I couldn't keep up with.

Keep up the good fight.

Mathis is NOT a QB...he is an athlete...but he’s not Tebow or Vince Young. Can’t win with him either. Season is done...see what we have in Beck. Kid probably doesn’t “practice” like Kirby likes but may just have the game time juice...we will never know.

I’ve watched BVG...

Someone tell me what about this kid makes you think he is a world beater. I don’t see it.

I meant Bennett was an interception machine in Juco. 56% & second in the nation in ints. He's 4 years in. This is who he is. They're is no getting better.

Honestly how much does it really matter?

A healthy Bennett is fine as a backup.
