It wasn't the fake punt or missed fg, it was this...

Dawgs get the ball with 5:19 left in the game. They run the dumbass Fields play and then Jake hits Swift for a 26yd pass play and we have the ball on the Bama 49, 1st and 10, with under 5 minutes left on the clock.

We literally need 2 first downs and to drain every playclock down to <5 and the game is ours or it goes to OT. This is football coaching/game management 101. Here's what we did:

1st & 10 -- Holyfield up the gut for LOSS of 1yd
2nd & 11 -- Jake throws it away
3rd & 11 -- Jake throws it away
4th & 11 -- The fake. Bama gets ball with >3mins left!!!

Where the frick were the short passes toward the middle of the field?
Where the frick were the screen passes?
How about a quick slant to Godwin or 5yd button hook for Nauta?
How about an edge rush tossed in here or there?

We needed quick completions to keep the clock running and avoid Bama's pass rush. We needed to get the ball to our playmakers.

Chaney called a pretty good game but seemingly not recognizing that this series should be the last possession of the game was inexcusable, in my eyes. Bama had all 3 TOs left but Saban isn't going to start burning them until the game clock is under 1:30-2:00.

So yes, the 4th down play was baffling but we should've never been in position to have to make that decision. Hell, even picking up a single first down gets us into the far edge of Rodrigo's range!

I know, man. That series has been eating at me all day and reading about "fake punt this" and "fake punt that" has just made it worse for me.

I just hope Chaney and Kirby are learning from these losses.

I was doing pretty good until I got on Twitter and went back through each score alert & radio call. Just sitting here pondering that we were up 28-14 in the 3rd over Bama. 28 to 14 and shoulda been 31-14. That hurts.

Nauta was open on the third down play for a first down.

Making the easy field goal probably wins the game. Fromm sliding 2 yards short of a first down doesn’t help either.

I'm afraid you're right with that.

You gotta know where the first down marker is and honestly when you’re playing to knock the team off that just beat you 11 months ago for the national championship, you don’t slide 2 yards short. You keep running until someone hits you.

Fromm might lack the killer instinct.

I think he is a gamer, but that slide was a result of previous runs in the season where he was probably yelled at for not sliding so he doesn't get hurt.

Unfortunately, in that situation, frick it you keep going.

Should've gone all Elway - no way you get denied there because you dont want to take a hit. Otherwise, I saw some throws from Fromm in that game that make me think he might have a little Drew Brees in him.

This guy gets it.

Yes the fake sucked. But the problem was playcalling on that and the previous drive.

I hope 2019 is as glorious as we all think. Must be undefeated going into the SECcG. Just in case we lose that, sneak into playoffs anyway at #4.

This have nothing to do with your thesis. You could have started at "Jake hits Swift for a 26yd pass play and we have the ball on the Bama 49, 1st and 10, with under 5 minutes left on the clock". Why do you hate Fields so much?

A current gamer would never slide in that situation. We either coached it out of him or he is scared of Losing his job like Eason did.

Fromm shouldn't have slid.

But that is a mistake that even Pros make.

You've got to see the forest from the trees, sometimes.

Kirby talks about inches a lot. It sucks.

Coached it out of him, last year he never slid.

Also, he is big enough to take some of those hits.

Kirby got in his face before, I think last year for running out of bounds before he made it to the sticks.

Your points are what I am dwelling on the most. I think most of us losing sleep over the 3 and outs. It was a choke. Hopefully Fromm will have a chance to redeem his 4th quarter ineptitude.

What game was that? I seem to remember something that way. If so, He seems like he is protecting himself instead of giving his all
