Kirby actually lost me during the Bama game. He gets clowned by every coach with a similarly talented roster. He’s just not good enough at the part that really matters. I really kind of wish he had never come home.

Kirby needs a dynamic innovative OC who is payed well enough to stick with our team and Kirby needs to let said OC completely control the offense.
I'm fine with Kirby being involved with the defense because he was a good DC at Alabama.
Otherwise, Kirby needs to be hired as an expensive recruiting coordinator and get a coach who understands who to build a complete team like Pittman is doing at Arkansas.

I really cannot believe some of the posts in this thread. I would love to hear thoughts on who we should get to replace Kirby.

No, and I think Monken is a good OC.
But 2 things: I don't think Monken has free reign over the offense due to Kirby's influence and I doubt that Monken will stick with us long enough to have continuity on offense though I hope he does.

Oh..we wouldn’t get anyone BETTER...

Not the point for me. Kirby raised the bar of expectations to “in the hunt” EVERY year.
That would be fine if he didn’t keep getting owned against teams with similar talent levels when it’s time to get over the hump. He can’t do it. So it’s like he has taken our MNC blue balls to the next level and left us edging for 5 years.

This would be the 4th year in a row “in the hunt” if terrible luck with injuries didn’t happen.

You do realize it took Dabo 7 years. Saban more than that I think. The dude is 45
Unless he collapses, we will get there.

He keeps making the same mistakes. That’s why he lost me. He is too stubborn to adapt.

Are you mad he didn’t sign a grad transfer at qb?

Or was his biggest mistake not getting a new offensive coordinator?

I’m not mad about anything. I just see the refusal to grow and adapt as a coach. Perhaps admit there is more than one way to do things. That’s what I talking about. If you want specifics, he has mangled the QB situation and handcuffed his OC no matter who it was. He hasn’t yet learned that he does not know QB’s better than his OC.

There is a part of me that thinks that Kirby is an exceptional recruiter but just not a great Head Coach. I'm not ready to give up on him because chances are greater things go backwards instead of forwards. But he needs some help or to change things up or something.

I think many are coming to the same conclusion. Kirby was DC under Saban for 8 years during the time when Alabama's offense was pretty vanilla and relied on the defense to stifle their opponents. This worked pretty well until offenses evolved to the point today where the best offenses are routinely overpowering the best defenses.
Hopefully the next time we recruit a Justine Fields, Kirby will have the presence of mind to let the OC build the offense around a star QB because that is a significant part of what is missing in his incomplete teams.

I don’t understand this narrative. He realized his mistake with Coley last year and brought in an OC that went against his offensive philosophy. He brought in Newman that was supposedly dynamic and not a game manager. He has also stated that Monken has full autonomy of the play calling. All of these tell me that he has adapted.

Smart went out and hired Monken, who everyone was gushing over, and then picked up Newman to run the new offense. Newman leaving messed it up but I thought that Smart was changing with those moves. Sucks that Newman left.

We haven't had much in the way of continuity on offense for a good while. So that would just be par for the course.

Yes. Monken and his staff have full control of offensive game planning and play calling.

Earlier in the week, Kirby said that HE decide who the starter is.

Later in the week, he said that he and Coley talk a lot about the QB’s AND offensive game planning (supposedly from the point of view of just Kirby scouting the defense from a defensive coaches perspective).

All of that translates to Kirby paying a GOOD OC a million + only to still have his hands all over important aspects of the offense.

Thus, he lost me because he refuses to adapt and learn.

Hiring monken and signing Newman proves you wrong. You refuse to acknowledge those 2 moves because they prove you wrong.
