,and that's a big if, do we make a play for Kirby again?

Most folks are aware some of what happened the last go around. He had certain things he wanted to see changed that he thought would offer a greater chance to be successful. Most of the discussion was about Garner and S&C. He apparently did everything other than signing the contract before deciding against it.

He is a huge thorn in our side and a great recruiter. And now would seem like a better time for him to make the jump than last time. We have been recruiting for the 3-4 so his transition should be relatively smooth in terms of concepts. Garner is gone. We have the speed coach in S&C now. Would we go back to him at this point? And would he find things more to his liking at this point?

No. Why hire a guy that will just be leaving again next year for a HC job.

Aside from the fact, the last time UGA made a run at him he made it clear he wasn't looking to make a lateral move. Pipe dream if anyone thinks UGA would get him anyway.

Yes he was. Saban and Bama gave him a raise at the 11th hour and we then turned to Grantham shortly thereafter.

Only way we get Kirby is head coach in waiting with Richt saying he's gone in 3 years or less.

In short, nit gonna happen.

Coach O is, by far, the best choice should we have to replace Grantham. NFL experience, and knows our system, no huge changes to overhaul the defense, and all the kids know h and are familiar with him. This is a can't lose move, if it has to be made.

Kirby would be ideal. Regardless of what the sour grapers say

He has become a recruiting force in Ga. He's spent almost his entire career under the greatest cfb coach of all time. UGA ties. What else do you want?

Making him HCIW wouldnt be an issue for me at all

Kirby pissed me off big time last go 'round, but he would definitely help us close our borders and he calls a great game.

Close in a manner of speaking. I have a family member on the board of directors and they all believed he was coming. Smart asked to think about the decision overnight, which he did, then conferred with Saban the next morning. Smart and Saban came to some sort of agreement and he then received an extension to his contract shortly thereafter to remain the Bama DC.

The decision rubbed some of the board of directors the wrong way and I can tell you that Kirby Smart will not be on their short list ANYTIME soon, be it DC or HC or any other position.

ETA: to the question would he be considered for DC if Grantham left; again I say, why hire a guy that WILL be a HC somewhere within the next year to year and a half.

me too. No doubt. But I'm definitely not down for looking like UT trying to find a HC a few months ago either

If Richt is gone in the next year or two like everyone assumes, I think we should think about that transition now. We've all seen what egg on the face looks like. Even I've been surprised at the challenge of an SEC school trying to find a HC to step into this meat grinding conference for 4mil+ a year. You've got coaches from the big east and acc saying "no fricking thanks"

Find your guy, make him an assistant HC , HCIW, million a yr, and move forward.

Agree. Smart is our next logical HC. When Richt's contract runs out, I would not mind at all Kirby being promoted to the HC position. We've got to do something to start reeling in the cream of the crop in our home state.

It won't be Smart; not that I would have a problem with the move if it were.

What about Ed Orgeron?

Big Ed would be a grand slam. Alot of people don't like his tactics, but nobody sure as shite likes to recruit against him either

To all those on here wanting somebody fiercely competitive to come in and level the playing field against the Bamas and Ole Misses, Ed is your guy

eta. That said, him and CMR coexisting as coaches together is the equivalent to Mel Gibson and Howard stern being cellmates at a correctional facility

I agree. I think it's the main reason that he and Kiffin work well together (and Carrol before CLK). But damn, the recruiting boon it would be.....
