Someone tell me I'm crazy, but I would think on a neutral site, with that game film, our players and coaches would enter that game a bit differently. I can't imagine we continue to try unsuccessfully to run into the teeth of what is likely the best part of their defense over and over.

I would think it would be almost impossible for Auburn not to go into the game a little overconfident. I could see a different outcome. I woulldn't predict a different outcome, though.

The turning point for me was when we missed the FG going into the half, then after stopping them at the beginning of the third quarter giving the ball back to them after the jumping call on their punt.

It's hard to tell what would have happened had we gotten the ball in the third quarter....but if....IF we had scored even a FG, we would have been down only by 3.

The way it went (Missing FG, letting them keep the ball and then scoring) put them up by 16 and really changed the whole complexion of the game.

We simply made way too many stupid mistakes and could not overcome them. Don't get me wrong....Auburn did a great job of stopping our run game, so I think Auburn would have won anyway, but it certainly should not have been the blowout it was.

We committed 7 penalties for 75 yards while they did 5 penalties for 29 yards. That is huge. Add to that, that our penalties seemed to come at the most critical times, and it just says that we played undisciplined football and allowed our emotions to get the better of us. Auburn completely took us out of our game.

Just going off of memory, but I think you've got this inverted a bit.

The leaping penalty was in the 2nd I believe and led to the Slayton TD that made it 16-7 instead of 9-7 with us getting a short field. Agreed on the missed FG (and the decision to run the ball right before rather than take a shot at the EZ or at least a first down with the already short field. To Kirby's point though, they weren't blocking well and I think they were worried about getting knocked out of FG range... missing the FG was unfortunate result, but I can at least understand the logic a *bit*... even if I disagree with it.

The third quarter "game over" moment was the muffed punt. Just sucked. You could see how emotionally distraught Mecole was after it as well... That's a kid that has worked really hard this year and it was just a mistake that we couldn't afford at the worst possible time. He knew it but you can't cry over spilt milk either... Just the way it goes.

Either way... I just look at the game flow and see enough ways that it could have gone a little differently that I see a rematch at least being close... dunno that I'd predict a win, but I (generally not being a huge optimist) feel that it could have easily been a one score game by the middle of the 3rd when the dam broke, giving us a very different ball game.

You're right, and I was wrong. Don't get old, you can't remember nuttin'!

The TD that put Auburn up by 16 after the half came after the Mecole Fumble.

Either way, the missed FG hurt us badly keeping us at 9 points down instead of 6 points...then the muffed punt by Mecole and subsequent TD put them up by 16. As good as Mecole is, he has had a lot of problems with ball security this year.....dropped passes and then this fumble.

I agree 100%. Eliminate the penalties and costly turnover and we have a different game. I agree, it's hard to see a victory, because they still dominated the LOS and stopped our running game, though.

....and we had Van Gorder in the booth last year. That certainly didn't hurt us.

Well... the alternative isn't so great either...

If Auburn plays as well in a rematch as they did in that game after also taking down Bama the week before... frick it.. Hat's off to ya... go win a frickin' trophy.

Good point!

It'll be hard for them to maintain the kind of intensity that would take.....but that is the intensity it will take to play through the playoffs. but playing Alabama, then us in the SECCG and THEN going through the playoffs? wow.

However, I can't help but think the way we have beaten Auburn the past 10 years....what do you think it would be like if we beat them in the SECCG? Their whole fan base would go jump off a bridge.

I do have to say, though....some of them have been pretty big jerks...but as a whole, they have pretty good. now, if people went to the Rant trying to trash talk them after that loss, they jumped them....but that's to be understood.

This bugged me. Not so much the decision to run the ball to set up the FG but the decision to run it outside the hash. Perhaps that's where Hot Rod likes kicking 40+yd FGs from but I was really shocked they didn't use that rush to set him up for a straight-on kick.
