I think everyone would agree Herschel Walker is the greatest RB in UGA history, but who would you guys say is the greatest QB?
No limits. No rules. All I ask is that you give an explanation for your choice. Discuss..

The most talented was Stafford, the most productive was Murray, and the best winner was Greene.
Greatest is a difficult distinction. You would also have to take Zeier and Tarkenton into account.

i think it really comes down to Greene or Murray, at least for my lifetime. never saw Zeier or Tarkenton, Blue, etc. play.
Greene had the better defense. Murray the better weapons. in the end I think I would go with Greene. both had huge heart, but Greene got the job done.

I tend to agree. It's really tough to compare these two because of the defense Greene had and the weapons Murray had, like you mentioned. It's tough to tell how much better or worse either would have done had the roles been reversed.
If I'm going by the eye test, I would take Murray probably, but it's really tough to argue against Greene's W/L record.

Agreed. Switch the defenses and you might have two completely different teams/outcomes.

It's probably not the popular pick... but Tarkenton.
Despite being a numbnuts with a microphone in his hands, he revolutionized the position.

I never saw Tarkenton play, but I always got the impression that he did most of his work as a pro. His college stats aren't extraordinary by any means, even for his time.
ETA: After a second look, his stats are good, but I don't know if I would call them revolutionary in college.

I had a well thought out post but my browser crashed....
Cliff notes:
Aaron the best, Stafford the rawest, and Greene will be the most under appreciated of them

Ray Goff would have to be mentioned going from a UGA team captain and three year Letterman then returning as Head Coach years later.

I was leaning toward Greene due to the fact he broke records and won the SEC championship. I didn't really look at the defense angle...his record W/L all four years was a lot better though than Murray's. Given the defense aspect I'd have to agree.

Let's say that it wasn't a passing league back then. I think he led the conference in attempts in his 3 seasons at UGA.

Well, those who argue that Greene have the defense have to also account for how Murray had a better offense and a full time OC.
No, I don't count Callaway.

yeah this cant be overlooked. murray was more athletic which allowed for more options, but Greene with Gurley and a spread offense would have been killer.
and yes, i know greene played in a spread...but the version murray played under was much more nuanced.

Not really a fair comparison when you look at it this way...
Aaron was 20 years old in his first season at UGA.
Stafford was 20 years old in his last game at UGA.
It's the same way when people compare Gurley to Moreno. Moreno was 20 in his first game.
Gurley isn't 20 yet.

doesn't really matter though. staff never lived up to the hype in college. even in 07/08 he overthrew deep, open balls. he made some tremendous throws as well, but the consistency was lacking.

Greene..that fella was a winner...

Murray's receivers were infinitely more reliable than Greene's. Greene had Terrance Edwards. Fred Gibson and Reggie Brown showed flashes but the entire receiving corp I feel during Greene's tenure loved drops. Greene also dealt with RB corps in flux for half his career. And dare I say a far worse OL toward the end of his career.
Murray had better WRs, better RBs most the time, and a better OL (not that the OL should feel good about themselves)
