He doesn't suck but he isn't good enough to overcome a big deficit and he is not worth playing if he can't protect the ball. Play calling abandoning the run hurt is too, but Monken schemed a lot of open passes, just have to know the QB tho. Good plays that you're QB can't hit don't help.
