Dan Wolken: if Kirby doesn't win the East in 17, he's a clown

I mean, I wasnt gonna go that harsh to call him a clown, but I agree with basically everything else he says.

quote:
“Let’s not give Georgia that much of a pass,” said Wolken. “If Kirby Smart doesn’t win the East next year, he’s a clown. I’m sorry. Point blank. They are so far above the rest of that division in terms of talent right now with the players that they’ve got coming back. Give me a break. The expectation for Georgia next year should be winning the East, point blank… period. If they don’t get that done, then I have to seriously question whether Kirby can coach.”

I think anything short of winning the east would be a disappointment but I'm not sure that makes Kirby a clown...yet

More for those who don't want to click. The audio of this is also in the link in the OP.
And yes, at the Michel misspelling.
quote:
“He [Smart] did not come into a situation where they were loaded to bear at every position,” Wolken said. “They definitely knew they had some holes to fill and I understand that. It’s going to take some recruiting over a couple of years to get strong enough and deep enough at certain positions that they can really compete on the national level. But that’s not what we’re talking about here.
“We’re talking about winning a terrible division where we’ve got teams like Vandy, Missouri, South Carolina is definitely improving, but they’re not ready for prime time. Tennessee’s a joke, Florida’s not very good right now. Look at the teams they’re competing against. They [UGA] have no excuse not to win this division next year when you’ve got Nick Chubb coming back, you’ve got Sony Michele, Jacob Eason has got to take a step forward, you’ve got guys defensively; I think they’re pretty loaded on that side of the ball. I’m sorry, they are so much more talented than the rest of that division right now, I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear any excuses.”

I agree that Georgia should be favored to win the East but that is as much as I will say about it. The key will be our OL play and our redzone defense needs to improve a lot. Eason needs to improve his accuracy and overall play; he should. And we need some taller receivers who can go up and take control of the ball on critical downs.

I think 10-2 is the most any reasonable Georgia fan could ask for right now. If we don't win the East at 10-2, it would mean either Florida or Tennessee are a top 10 team competing for a playoff spot.
This whole discussion is based on Florida and Tennessee being what we think they will be, which is to say underwhelming at best and mediocre at worst.

it totally would. the door is wide open....he needs this pretty bad fter last year.

This. Red zone OL and Red zone OLB/S (DL if no TT) are huge, huge concerns.
Games are won and lost here.
Wolken results to name calling to make himself relevant (here's a hint... he isnt).

Who is Dan Wolken? Never heard of him. Decent commentary though, but tired and obvious.

If we don't win the East we need a better clown. I've heard that Chip Baskets is looking for a job.

This shite is glorious right here... Fox just needs more time after 8 years, but Kirby needs to win the division in year 2 or we're effed...
Before you try and argue "but we're good at football", we haven't won the conference since 2005, we haven't made the SECCG since 2012, and making the tournament is a lower bar than winning the division in football. You essentially need only be the 4-5th best team in the conference, rather than the best from one half, and the SEC is clearly not the dominant conference in basketball that most see it as in football anyways...
I don't disagree that substantial wins are going to be needed this year to continue Smart's successes in the recruiting arena, but it's just silly to act like it's a must win the division situation in year 2... There are too many variables that could impact it, both positively or negatively, to make that call at this point.

We should win the SECE this year, but I think and reasonable person could suppress their hatred until the end of the 2018 season. We need wins to help in recruiting, but I think 10-2 will please any UGA fan for just CKS 2nd year. We do need to beat UT, UF, GT though.

In years past we have lost to teams that had lesser talent. Did this guy call the coach a clown then?

I don't actually disagree, but there are some assumptions made at this point regarding health and improvement at OL, WR, DL, and even development at QB.

I hear Kirby was named as a front runner for the ATM job when it opens next year. His agent must have a gut feeling.

It's not about being good at football. The program just has so many more resources at its disposal than the basketball program. Thus higher expectations from me.
UF is down, utk lost everyone, usc is still a ways away from competing. We hav3 a very soft west schedule.
If kirby doesn't win the east it will be a huge disappointment and would l3ad me to believe he is not the man for the job. I don't care how many excuses you want to give him.

So you would be fricked if we don't win the east? Because the program wouldn't be.
