You believe that JHC never would have been suspended for this until AJC reported the incident? And Richt suspends him to save face?

I dont't know, with Richt maybe. But I'd like to see it handled internally instead of having an AJC headline "UGA player faces possible suspicion with marijuana incident" that pretty much forces Richt to decide that day or look soft.

I think that the underlying message in the AJC sports desk is Down w/ UGA

I read your comments on the story too. This a retarded argument. He doesn't get paid to report on the students, or family members, or the other girl that got pulled over at the same time. His JOB is to write about UGA football. Good, bad, or indifferent. While I don't like Chip, you just made yourself look stupid with this argument. I would delete the post...

He says in the article that he's not out to get UGA students.

That's the only issue I have.

Man up. Say, "I get paid to check the jail logs for UGA Athletes".

Don't pussy out and say, "I am not out to get UGA players" when that is obviously what his job is.

JHC would have a hammy injury during game week and would miss out on game 1. It's how business is supposed to be done.

Nobody talks about Zander Ogletree's suspension because it never became public. The coaches don't comment on suspensions until forced to.

The course of action for Richt should be simple: bar reporters like Towers from interviews and practices. See how long the reporting of petty bullshite lasts after Towers is starved for original writing material.

The reporters' employers bitch to the SEC and NCAA and remark that "Gee, there sure are an awful lot of rumors about pay-to-play, drugs, sexual assault, underage drinking, steroids, assorted thug behavior in an awful lot of schools. Be a shame if someone happened to do a bunch of real in-depth investigations on all of that. A real shame. The Pulitzers would probably make up for it, though."

Then Richt would be on page 1 of every paper taking as much ATM as humanly possible from every reporter who was interested.

Realizing his life's work has been reduced to trolling police reports for 18 year olds with traffic violations...

My issue is that the ajc through Towers and others have said it is their job to report all things UGA which is why they report all of the negative incidentsn yet you very rarely see the positive stories covered. We have several players who donate their time for different charitable orginizations. Not to say that its not ever covered, just very rare. Maybe cover the backups backup who has a 4 point gpa in "x" or that their are over 30 kids who have stayed in Athens over the summer to work out. How about what David Jacobs is up to? Dig out positive stories in stead of acting like a tabloid and using negatives for response. Do some actual journalism in stead of just reading police reports. I understand it has to be reported, just make sure its balanced.

Reporters don't get paid to report the news. They get paid to report things that will get people to read the paper/article. It's all about money, and fewer people care if Aaron Murray is hosting a pageant for special needs kids than care if he's going to miss any games due to a suspension.

While it sucks to not get equal time on the reporting, he's just doing what he's getting paid to do: "rustle jimmies".

If it bleeds, it leads... That's all there is to it. The more the AJC readership/subscriptions flag, the more sensational the reporting will become to prop up a dying dinosaur.

I know Chip, he got his degree at UGA and IS a dawg fan. He's been covering the dawgs for over 25 years, starting at the Red and Black. Good guy, glad to be his friend.

I got in trouble as well when I was at UGA but I wasn't famous Sucks that these football stars land in the papers but that's what sells in our society now. If he doesn't write about it, somebody else will.

No doubt.

But don't write an entire piece with the opening line, "i am not out to get uga athletes" when the next 3 paragraphs detail that he gets paid to check the jail logs... and if he doesn't report it, then someone else will... and it's his job to put out the accurate information first.

he is absolutely getting paid to go out and find the dirt. as you imply... if he doesn't do that, then he is not doing his job.

Reporters get paid to fill the spaces between advertisements. The money in media is in advertising space (or time, for radio/tv) sold, not the reporting. The "journalism" part might win 'em awards, but they keep the lights on and the shareholders happy by advertising "2 for 1 on Super Chunky JIF"

don't know about y'all, but a coupla years ago, the AJC was prolly my 3rd-4th visit of the day after GTP,the guy at the Macon Telegraph who went to Philly(name??), Dawgbytes at the ABH & ESPN...

Now I usually have to read a post elsewhere about a story to even go to an AJC article.... Between Carvell, Chip & the fricked up people who post comments it's not even on my radar most days...
