Taking the kids (5 and 7) to GymDogs today and looking for the best lunch spot... was thinking a Sons and Steverinos kind of place but those are long gone... any suggestions?

It’s a little chilly out but typically Cali N Tito’s or Teds Most Best are my votes for places to take kids and still eat good, unique to Athens food (Cali is close by Stegeman and Teds is downtown).
There’s also a newer indoor Cali N Tito’s off of Barnett Shoals/Gaines School Rd area that is great to take kids to; lot of stuff to look at and play around

Yeah, that is Why the Varsity has been at it for decades and all the other places will be something else in a few years.

Varsity is a Georgia Tech institution. Never forget that.

Wrong. Varsity is an Atlanta institution. Always swing by downtown when I'm in town. Foot long chili cheese dog and onion rings, and a pack of Tums for the road.

Founded by a GT student on their campus before moving it to NA after he graduated. Fact.

Isn't Fran Tarkenton the football guy logo for the varsity?

I dont know.
I was watching a PBS doc this week about famous hot dog stands, Nathan's on Coney Island Etc, they included Varsity in the program and discussed its humble beginning on GT campus.

Yeah, didn't the guy drop out of GT to start it? I think I remember seeing that somewhere, could be wrong, but it definitely has roots in GA Tech.

Frank Gordy graduated from Reinhardt College and went to Tech for grad school, but dropped out after a year to open his first restaurant,The Yellow Jacket, on Luckie Street, in 1928. He built The Varsity on North Avenue a few years later.

Thanks all - ended up going to Blind Pig (wings were great) but mental note on Teds Most Best and will hit that next time.
ITDawg - you're right - went to UGA for 5 years and never went to a meet - it was lots of fun, girls loved it and came down to the wire with Dawg win... great day all in all!

Grindhouse Burgers on Lumpkin. Close to the Steg. The old cheesey B movies they play on the wall may not be for the kids but they're sooo bad and cheesey even the "horror" flicks are actually funny.
