Now that Pete Golding left for Ole Miss? I see him getting a huge raise one way or the other.

Insiders say no. Lateral move and all that jazz.

I wouldn’t even consider it a lateral move at this point.

Not sure why Schumann would leave GA

There was a time when going from DC at UGA to DC at Bama would be considered a promotion.

But now is not that time. That is a time that has passed.

Lol. Shaft getting downvoted into oblivion for suggesting that Schumann would, perhaps, be better off staying at UGA if he wants to be a HC.

Doesn’t seem like a lateral move to me since Schumann can dump the “co-“ in his title. I’d love for him to stay and it would hurt to lose him but I wouldn’t blame him.

Kirby should make Assistant HC and Co-DC and groom him to be an HC in a couple of years.

PS: I expect Muschamp to be ready to take another HC job in a couple of years.

He went to Alabama too, right?

Shu's bama connections are all at Kirby's hip, not Saban's. Shu is a Kirby acolyte, not a Saban guy.

This. He was Kirby's first hire. That's not insignificant. Hired him as a position coach. Up until that point, he has been nothing more than a "coffee getter".

I'm not saying that Saban won't get him, but I am saying that it'll cost him to get him as an unproven Defensive Coordinator, and I'm not sure if Saban would go that route.

I seen you troll with the Muschamp comment, rig, but I don't really feel like that is a troll. Champ has a Saban connection, is a fine defensive coordinator, and may be looking to branch out again.

Who knows. Saban could do worse.

But, Alabama reaching over to the Kirby coaching tree....lulz.

Desperation.

I wasn't trolling with that. I think it is more likely that Mus takes the bama job than shu. I honestly believe that.

I could be wrong. But mus was Saban's DC in his LSU days.

Muschamp’s kid is still on the UGA team. Not that it’s a deal breaker.

It would seem to make more sense for Muschamp to go, but I could see Schumann would want to lose the CO title. Also it would be a good chance for him to be revitalizer of Bama's D and have 5 star guys. It wouldn't shock me if he jumped and you know Bama would come with some big $.

Schumman's salary

I don't if this is current but says Schumman is making 905K. Certainly Bama would offer him 1.5 mill or something in that neighborhood. It doesn't really seem that lateral if he can lose the CO title and get a big raise. Still his relationship and status in Athens might be worth more than titles and money. It would seem he would have a good shot at being Kirby's successor at this point.

If Schumann can't do the math and realize his potential beyond $1.5M, then he might not be worth keeping around.

Better, for now, to make the $1M and remain seated at the learning tree at 32 years old than to "lose the CO" and take complete ownership of a defense at a very unforgiving school.

Continue to be groomed.

In a few years, take a head coaching position.

He is 32.

Kirby was once offered a lateral move to his alma mater. He turned it down. He was quite a bit older than 32.

Schumann was with Kirby when this happened. It's likely that he heard Saban advise Kirby on the matter. It's even more likely that Kirby, at least, shared that advise.

He has watched that advice pay off...in multiples of $1.5M.

He was. He then went to Texas and was made HCIW under Mack Brown. Kirby went with Saban to the Dolphins.

Muschamp's stock was very high, at the time.

A lot of good comments in this thread. My random thoughts working through scenarios…

Schuman and Boom probably won’t exist as co DC’s. I wonder if Boom would take a HC position again though as he’s done it twice and it didn’t work. Would he do it third time to get paid? IDK.

Elevating Boom to Asst HC and Schuman as DC would probably not fly as I don’t think any UGA fan wants Boom in that spot.

Elevating Schuman to Asst HC might fly depending on the role and what it requires. Kirby is too young for a HCIW position but would benefit from somebody he trusts taking part of the load and it would benefit Schuman to learn what it takes to be HC.

I don’t see Kirby demoting or moving Boom so Schuman can be be DC…because of Kirby’s history with Boom unless he can find another spot for him.

So all of that BS aside, Schuman is a young man and it all depends on what he wants out of his career. Taking the DC role for Bama or some type of Asst HC for gA would be equally impressive. As a Bama alum though…I have to think the DC position would be most appealing. If any of u had the option wouldn’t we go to UGA?

TL/DR. I think he’s gone.

Kirby was already DC at Bama so why take DC at Georgia? He knew he would get the HC offer in a few years.
