Im thinking we have midyear shakeups on the OL.

That’s NEVER good. We need a unit to play every game together. Regardless... doesn’t matter who’s in front of them, you play Mims and Jones.

Disagree on both takes.

1) you play the guy who gets us the win against clemson. That may not be the same guy who gets us the win in December against bama.

2) nothing should be handed to Mims or Jones. Jones added 15 pounds and is now getting beat with a speed rush (previously, he was near perfect in pass pro but a liability in run blocking). Why take shortcuts? Make them earn it. Best man plays.

This tweet says a lot. Jones or Mims will start vs Clemson. Too many people are indicating Truss is soft. I'm also keeping my eye on center. Other than 1 bad snap SVP have been quiet. I'm hoping all that top talent live up to their billing.

Maybe

I havent heard that truss is soft.
He is a grader in the run game. Needs consistency.

Ive read that jones added weight (needed to) to help his run blocking which was below par. He is adjusting to weight (speed rush beat him multiple times in scrimmage) where pass pro wasnt a concern previously (considered best pass pro option coming into spring).

Im not seeing any practices. I just listen to a lot of podcasts. Someone may watch 2 reps, have an opinion, and share it for all i know and it could be baseless.

Ericson shouldn’t be starting at a school like UGA. He was manhandled numerous times. Shaffer has experience but is average. I haven’t really seen enough of Truss. I know he also struggles with speed rushers.

I dont think it gets said out loud, but if ericson doesnt start at C then he is the first off the bench at guard (ahead of a lot of talented players). I know a lot of people high on Van Pran. But i feel like people are too quick to discredit ericson.

Shaffer and Truss can be great. High motor and high effort. The problem with too much effort is that it can lead to offensive linemen getting dropped due to lack of balance. Both players need to play better under control.
Truss also (im my opinion) is a tackle who isnt great at pass protection (in other words, we should be giving him looks at right guard. Not much different than ben cleveland). He may be our best option at tackle against clemson. Or maybe he needs to push Shaffer at RG (coaches probably dont agree with this take but i would put money that any game reps for truss in the nfl would be at guard).

Saw some talk that he was thinking about joining the military and might still be thinking about it.

Don't think he ever wanted to play center in college anyway?

There's continuous chatter about this dude

quote:

Daniels made a number of similar points to that of Edwards when discussing the on-field traits that Mitchell has shown in his first 10 Georgia practices.

“Talking about how he plays, he’s got great twitch and is going to develop to become a great young player,” Daniels said. “We’ve just got to let him take his time and learn the system and do his thing, and I think he’ll be a good football player.”

Hopefully that becomes true in games. I'll die if it's another Matt Landers situation

Landers was a weird/unique situation. He would make a great catch... and his foot was out of bounds. The rest of the time was bad hands or poor effort.

I have a hard time imagining someone that inefficient with that much playing time going forward.

Truss is getting a bit undersold. Dude came from a small New England state, where he was dominant. Pretty big adjustment to the most competitive conference in college football. But the sheer size and power is there. I do see him as more of a prototypical right tackle, though.

Jones will put it all together, too, but he was really light when he showed up. Agility needs to catch back up to all that bulk he had to add last year.

Mims is the one with the whole package, minus experience at this point.

Nice problem to have. Just keeping signing these kinds of guys. I remember when Richt could only sign a highly touted tackle about once every 3 years if we were lucky. We constantly had guards playing tackle.

That was 99% of his time on field. Dude was garbage when it came to effort. The total antithesis of Pickens.

This would change everything post Pickens injury if DRob lives up to expectation. The question is will he miss any time against Clemson because of his arrest.

quote:

D Rob still gets nervous (scared) when he hears footsteps. That will never change.

quote:

Robertson, a 6-foot, 194-pound speedster, has upside and versatility to become a force in the Bulldogs offense. He'll show it early and often in 2021.”

quote:

“I’m excited for D-Rob. He’s a player that has improved throughout his time here," Smart said of the fifth-year wide receiver. "He came in and probably wasn’t as physical as he’d like to be, in terms of the SEC. He’s gotten faster, stronger, bigger—he’s able to do more things."

DRob breakout player is 2021

So I’m guessing his boot removal isn’t going to be a problem?

With Georgia set to hold its second scrimmage on Saturday, we'll continue to pay special attention to certain players.
Many of them you’ve already read about via our insider notes, following last week’s initial session. Some, perhaps you missed.
Let’s examine the situation, including a look at the players seeking to improve their current status, as well as some tidbits being reported behind the scenes.

Carson Beck is another player we're keeping our eye on. (Tony Walsh/UGA Sports Communications)

• Xavier Truss continues to compete for the starting job at left tackle. Broderick Jones played at right tackle on the second team. Truss, we understand, played relatively well. Both still have work to do. Jamaree Salyer remains in the picture, and coaches won’t hesitate to have him play the position again this fall. But they really hope either Jones or Truss can get the job done. Or maybe even Amarius Mims. Salyer was held out of last week's scrimmage.
• Warren Ericson has the edge at center, but Sedrick Van Pran-Grainger continues to receive a long look.
• Warren McClendon continues to be Mr. Steady at right tackle for now.
• Two young linemen whose names have been drawing praise, Tate Ratledge and Austin Blaske. Coaches love their work ethic. Ratledge continues to be a name to watch at right guard. Blaske can play all five spots on the line although is not int he two-deep at the moment.
• Carson Beck continues to impress at quarterback and is doing a good job of playing to his strength: getting the ball downfield. Coaches have been impressed with the way Beck has come into spring determined to better his game, and apparently the results are starting to show.
• Demetris Robertson opened eyes last week when he caught two touchdowns. Can he put together a similar performance Saturday? Although fans will understandably remain skeptical until they see it in an actual game, coaches still believe the Savannah native can be a big part of the offense.
• Receivers Justin Robinson and Adonai Mitchell have been talked about a lot. Robinson, with his physical presence, and Mitchell, with his ability to make plays. Both made plays last Saturday and will receive plenty of chances again tomorrow. Nobody likes to have the kind of injuries the Bulldogs are dealing with at wide receiver, but what it has done is given Georgia’s younger receivers even more opportunities than they would have received otherwise.
• Indications are Kendall Milton continues to have an excellent spring. Milton is healthy after injuring his knee in last year’s game against Florida and having a hamstring issue, and seems primed for a breakout. Zamir White and James Cook also continue to receive praise and perform just the way you expect a couple of upperclassmen would.
• Christopher Smith said he had received a look at cornerback, but that’s not unusual as basically every member of the secondary is cross-training to play as many spots as possible.
• Fans ask all the time about leaders. In the secondary, I'm told Lewis Cine is someone beginning to take that role to heart.
• Kelee Ringo still has some rust to knock off, which is understandable considering last week's scrimmage was his first time he's been healthy since undergoing Labrum surgery a year ago. He was held out of the scrimmage parts of practice. There's no denying the former five-star's talent. He just needs to get his game legs up under him, which he certainly will.
• Tight end Brock Bowers continues to impress.
• Quarterback JT Daniels threw seven or eight "beautiful" deep balls last week in the scrimmage. He also had three interceptions. Freshman Brock Vandagriff still has a long way to go to pick up the offense but that is completely normal. Being here for spring camp will pay big dividends for him in the fall.

I’m curious to know what the D-Line will be? Carter, Davis, and Wyatt? Walker a rotational player? I just don’t see how you can not start walker at this point? He’s a monster.
