I don't think this is happening. From the way it's looking, they won't do much better than Gus.

It certainly isn't looking that way.

Objectively, Auburn should have retained Malzahn and waited for his buyout to diminish. Gus is a good offensive mind but he needs a good dual-threat QB and an athletic OL to be effective.

Its not like Auburn is paying it. It got low enough to where the boosters said yes to fund it.

The problem is it really never diminished. They were on the hook for 75% of the remaining value through the end of the contract... so they could 1) wait longer, paying full price for those years that they retained him, and pay 75% of the remaining OR 2) shitcan him, and then pay 75% of the remaining.

The fear seemed to be that on the heels of a half decent season next year, they might not be able to justify letting him go and they didn't want to get stuck unable to make a move again.

Unfortunately for them, it sounds like they may have internally agreed that paying the buyout and promoting Steele cheaply would be enough, but the reaction has been less than positive.

I can't remember where I read this concerning Gus, but a source said Gus's problem is that he won't tweak his offense to counter defensive adjustments, he tries to run his offense "better" (whatever the hell that means). Simple conclusion is the SEC DC's now have a schematic advantage over him.

Also, sorry for contributing to the OT, but if we want to continue, probably worth moving out of the crootin thread. #sorryforthebuzzkill

Arik Gilbert is in Athens. The 5-Star TE is doing paperwork to transfer to the Dawgs today.

Do they have to be in the portal? I honestly don't know. I know the portal allows other schools to recruit you, but if you know where you want to transfer already, I don't THINK you HAVE to go into the portal.

If he doesn't officially enter the portal, his current school has no obligation to release him from his scholarship, which means he sits for 2 years.

I wouldn't think he'd go all the way to the point of filling out papers at another school without entering the portal. But I've been wrong before (just ask my wife (no pics)).

Per the NCAA transfer portal FAQ a student athlete is allowed to communicate with the destination schools office of admissions before he’s entered in the portal. Hopefully this is what’s going on with Arik.

Maybe I am misunderstanding things (It's been known to happen) but didn't the NCAA just approve a blanket waiver for transfers?

I can understand this. As a man you only have to learn to say 5 words.

"Yes dear." and "I was wrong."

I may be misunderstanding the waiver thing, and maybe you have to enter the portal to get the waiver. But it would be an easy thing to put your name in, apparently.
But it seems the NCAA is just granting a one year waiver for transfers.

You're doing it wrong. There's a much better 4 word phrase.

"You might be right."

Try it out.

I like that! Non committal, so you are neither admitting that you are wrong, and you give her some wriggle room to assume she is right.

Yes. I like that a lot!

I have not seen nor heard anything more on this. I would put this squarely in the "Unfounded rumor" category until something more solid comes to light.

How many more recruits do we pick up this year, do you think?

It's hard to say. There are so many ways that they have to make room, but I think it is safe to say 3-4 more.

Lots of rumors beginning to swirl around Siaka Ika (DT) and Arik Gilbert(TE). Gilbert is not in the portal as of yet....Ika is. I would not be surprised if we dipped into the portal for a CB and maybe a safety.

I am pretty sure we are done on offense. (other than Gilbert if he does become available)
