They are in a very under rated recruiting hotbed for sure.

UVA kept some talented players home last year. Probably would take a good coach.

There's enough talent in Hampton Roads, Richmond, and NOVA for one big-time program, imo, not two unless they literally get everyone. Mike London has successfully killed both the UVA and VT programs

My people said he wasn't a take anyway, but in reality if he chose Felon State he must want to partake in the things he can't do in Athens. How could someone see the headlines from the crap that the players on that team do and want to risk the program getting the shut down for a year or two at any time and not getting to play in meaningful games?

You can make a who's who list of stud HS players who left the state just from Hampton Roads alone. The locals around there swear that Ronald Curry (Hampton) was the best HS football player they ever saw and he ended up at UNC.

After the death penalty absolutely destroyed SMU football to the point that they'll probably never recover from it, I highly doubt we see it again.

I live in Richmond, so yeah, you hear that all the time.

Ronald Curry flipping from UVA to UNC was more damaging to that program than any recruit before or since. They fired their best coach of all time over it and haven't recovered other than a couple years with Matt Schaub. "Benedict Ronald" was devastating to recruits perception of UVA, and they are still trying to recover. The fact that Vick went to VT because Curry was going to UVA only makes it worse.

In fairness, a lot of the Hampton kids can't even sniff the academic threshold to get into and stay in UVA, and Tech's like 5 hours away.

I spent four years in the Norfolk/VA Beach area and had many conversations about this kind of thing with the locals. Didn't Curry flip because UVA wouldn't let him play basketball too?

I wish we could have gotten Sweat and don't really understand the mom's thought process, but hopefully we can make up for it in the upcoming days. I'm definitely a little surprised he went FSU, but not shocked at all. I wonder how much the Bud Foster rumors impacted his decision making.

This is the story from UVA people that are really connected and were and still are pretty big boosters. UVA wanted him in both sports for sure and would have let him play both (likely start in each as a freshman), but thought he was better at football. UNC played up the basketball angle and promised him a better chance at a Nike contract. UVA was sponsored by Reebok at the time. That was a big part of it. Boo Williams (big AAU hoops coach) wanted him at Carolina, as did his HS hoops coach.

The Hampton HS football coach wanted him at UVA, which was the better program at the time, and thought he should focus on football, which he was better at. He thought that as a QB, Curry needed to focus on that to develop properly.

Basically, Curry ended up choosing basketball focus and Nike at Carolina over football football focus at UVA.

It's probably easy to negatively recruit VT at this point, given the rapid decline of the program into mediocrity combined with Beamer's age. I doubt he's there three years from now, especially considering defense is not that team's problem. He fired Stinespring and brought in Loeffler to run his offense and it's still pathetic. They need competent QB play quickly or they'll keep spiraling downhill.

He could have been incredible, but instead ended up as a slot receiver in Oakland. Hindsight is 20/20, but he should have given up basketball and gone to UVA.

They're defending national champs on the verge of playing for another.

Based on what? The Jameis situation is a stain on the face of their university, but I'm not sure what you think that they may get probation or the death penalty for.

so, you're assuming UGA must have lost him cause of their drug testing policies?

If you look back in the thread you would know I was kidding about the first comment. I know they are defending national champs, but they are in the national headlines constantly with bad behavior from the players. And if anything comes out about the school or coach covering the players tracks on all this crap they are done. Anymore questions arse?

Per Rusty and Jake; don't look for Huggins to pick UGA Friday. They are hearing that it's Clemson more and more.

But nothing has that I'm aware of.

Let's not derail this thread anymore than I already have.

DGD, road trip to Orangeburg! We'll stop at Fairey Chevy and pick up 2014 Tahoe with spinners to leave with ol' Bert.
