Rankings for me dont mean jack anymore now that we have the playoffs. Just because we are ranked 5 and Auburn 12 doesnt mean anything.

That is because we don't have any losses.

Favorites are not determined that way. You know that.
I know espn picks auburn right now. If both teams are winning out, Auburn will be the home favorite.

Do you really believe that? Or is this just the type of BS that gets thrown out on the Internet without any thought.

It means we will likely be favored when we play them as we are considered a better football team.

We have a lot of Seniors on Defense right now. Atkins is not alone. Check the roster. But I do like Atkins. He doesnt get the credit he deserves

If we don't shite the bed and lose to an unranked or almost unranked team, we should be a top 3 team. Even if Auburn moves up, a top 3 team won't be a dog away

I have learned from the football internet, that it's bad to settle for mediocrity. Losing to a team that is not nearly as good as your team and accepting it as ok is settling for mediocrity. People who are champions demand perfection.

I see.

I think our coach feels the same way. You must be in heaven right now.

But you said "almost our entire defensive line are seniors." Just wanted clarification.

Doesn't make much of a difference if Thompson leaves
(Which he will) Ledbetter will probably stick around though.

We'll lose 3 maybe 4 LB's and 2/3 of our d-line.

Wasn't our schedule the second hardest in the country?

According to ESPN FPI, I think it was based on their pre-season projections... A lot of the difficulty was based on the premise that USCe, UK, Miss St, etc were markedly improved and that UF/UT had not dropped off significantly. To Peter's point, there won't be a ton of teams that we played this year that end the season ranked... On the upside... we still get credit for perceived difficulty at the time... even if they don't end up living up to that perception going forward.

Rankings should mean something because the top 4 teams go to the playoffs. And, rankings supposedly reflect the perceived strength of the teams....particularly as you get into the season. The deeper you get into the season the better feel for all the teams you have, so the rankings begin to take shape and have more meaning.
Even this early in the season it is difficult to tell, however, his comment was based upon who would be favored. If we are ranked 5 places higher than Auburn we would probably be favored. However, since we are playing at Auburn it might even be even.
Personally...I think our defense is a little better than theirs, but it is hard to tell about offense. They seem to be figuring things out, and when their offense is clicking, it is very difficult to stop. We do seem to have a very good pass rush, though, and that gave them fits early in the year.

You might be right, but I think we will miss him more than people think. There was a noticeable difference when he left the game at Tennessee, imo. I saw a drop off. However, some of the younger guys might step up and improve and we might not miss him. It's hard to tell.

I am surprised we have not heard more from Michail Carter. I was expecting some pretty big things from him. Rochester is one that could possibly step in and fill that spot, I guess.

Rochester got whipped a few times against Tennessee. I like him and didn't watch him on every single play but the ones i did he wasn't as strong and I felt he was last year.

If our defense continues to improve and stays healthy then we have a legit chance to go undefeated. Defensively, we present matchup problems all across the field because our kids are doing their jobs and playing fast/physical.

The team I am most concerned with is Tech. Tech's offense takes a lot of conventional wisdom out and really makes life difficult for a defense. Chop blocking makes it really hard to stop and having the QB and pitchman work together makes it really hard to stop and it stretches the field. I think bama beats us but if we keep it close and are undefeated we have a legit shot to play them again for the NC.

There was a definite drop off when Trent left the game. The middle was softer. Hopefully Rochester can improve and get stronger next year, so the drop off isn't as noticeable.

Tech really does not concern me this year. this defense has shown it is more disciplined against the option and they play their gaps well. Playing gaps is what is important against the option. If you don't over pursue and just stay with your assignment the option is easily stopped. If people begin overreacting and trying to fly to the ball, or if only one [player does not stay in position it is capable of gashing a defense.

We're the 3rd ranked defense in the country coming off
a shutout in Knoxville aND giving up 3 pts to MSU.

I'll be pretty happy if we just continue our current level of play.
