I re-watched the first 3 quarters, the offensive line got manhandled in run block but actually played pretty decent in pass block. Ewers regressed in pocket awareness and had some bad foot work. There were some blitzes not picked up from lack of communication or not seeing it in disguise.
I think Sark got out schemed. We barely audible out of plays and it looked like Ewers was having a difficult time reading the defense. He didn't go to his quick throws to TE or RB check-and-releases or hot routes.
Like some others have said, we really missed CJ Baxter in a game like this, but our line needs to be more physical in run blocking.

I think Sark got out schemed.
- If Wisner doesn’t drop that check down, I think we score after that INT.
- Ewers still looks hurt. Couldn’t climb the pocket well & the pressure coming in his face didn’t help.
- The delayed blitzes off the edges were brilliantly disguised & timed (Sabanlike). They ended several drives, forced TO’s and kept our QB’s from setting their feet.

I think he is, he practically admitted it in a post-game interview.
I also heard Babers say last night that someone was wide open on his first sack fumble, and he was looking in his direction but seemed to be waiting for Helm's route to develop further instead of getting the ball out of his hand. He regressed to one reads.

shite happens. We got humbled. Kirby's first SEC title with UGA was 2017. They got whipped by Auburn 40-17 and then beat them in the SECCG.
We were highly overconfident, OL couldnt pick up the pressure all night (shoutout Kirby for disgusing pressure really well). But the mistakes are fixable.

Watching the game the OL didn't have a chance because of Ewers. Georgia played 9 men within 5 yds of the line of scrimmage on nearly every play which totally confused every blocking assignment, and why did they do it ? They knew Ewers couldn't throw past 15 yds, he wouldn't run , and he would go into panic mode. Ewers had men wide open but would not step up into the pocket, instead taking the sack or throwing it away. He did this in the red river also and is a real head case now.

The OL played better than I thought on rewatch. The TE's and RB's need to get better at helping when they are left in to protect. In addition, as you said, QE needs to step up into the pocket, and he needs to throw off of his front leg instead of his back leg. If he keeps bailing on the pocket, he will keep running into the edge players.. because that is exactly where the OT are sending them.. That isn't the OT's fault.
Ewers needs to get better. It's as simple as that.
But there is good news. We won't face another front 7 like Georgia's unless we play Georgia again.. and I hope we get that chance.. that would mean we are in the SEC CG or in the playoffs. Idk if we will win that game, but I know it's hard to beat another good team twice in one year.

A good read if you have time. That Wisner drop still haunts me.

One thing about dropping a game - you want the next game to get here fast.
We lost to Georgia, and we didn't look especially well in doing it. But it *was* Georgia, so I'm willing to chalk it up as that for now.
We should get back on track against Vandy. I say we *should*, not we will. This will be a good game to reassess where we stand, and hopefully for Ewers to put up some numbers.
But here is my take on Ewers - No shade - I like the guy. But to me he's always seemed like a distant runner-up to Colt McCoy. He did go to Ohio St, and couldn't win the starting job. Now we hear he's always wanted to be a Longhorn and all that stuff? Idk... A starter in the NFL - Ewers will never be. It's just not there. Nice guy for sure. NFL QB, gosh no.
My biggest concern is Ewers gives the defense a 30-yard box to contain. Also his slow release + lack of velocity allows decent reaction time. Manning pushes the defense back another 20 yards. And he can put it on a rope if he has to. Also, he seems to have better field vision than Ewers - just hasn't had enough game time to work out his kinks. And yes, he's a running threat.
I'll say it, Texas is cutting off its nose with Ewers at this point. Ewers doesn't seem to be getting any better meanwhile Manning is not getting reps. A "personnel" management motive is driving all this I'm quite sure. Because right now today, after what I've seen - and given my next opponent is Vanderbilt - I'm putting Arch in and not looking back.
Texas is not responsible to carry Ewers to the NFL. That will never work.
Ewers is responsible to carry Texas on his way to the NFL. And we're not going to screen pass and check-down our way very far in the post-season, that you can bank on.

I really don't think Arch or QE would've been able to read that UGA defense Saturday. Which is weird, because against Bama last year QE didn't have any problems reading Bama disguises because they are similar style of coverages.
QE sucked, Sark sucked, WRs sucked, RBs sucked, o-line sucked. Everyone needs to be better. Sark didn't have them ready to read a NFL/Saban style defense for some reason.

I agree on that. So then the question becomes who should get the reps?
I'll even say leave Ewers in for that game - because no need to frustrate Manning while he's trying to acclimate.
But now he we are vs. Vandy. Ewers will likely have a good game. Meanwhile, Manning is holding the bench down and we wasted another day.
I guess my bottom line is this - I don't think Manning will lose us a game that Ewers could have won. That's my view.

I'm not sure either. We know QE can read a UGA style defense, so idk what happened. His confidence and swagger was lost from the injury and he really needs to get it back.
If he starts playing like he has a dog in him, then we will hopefully stop having this convo for the rest of the season.

I think QE's issue is he can't think ahead too much. That int shouldn't have happened.
Helm takes the inside release and let's #6 keep eyes on the QB since he doesn't have to turn his head. but this was a cover 2 zone and QE thought it was man from the CB.
If Helm took the outside release, this maybe would've been completed if the CB turns but if this was cover 2 then Helm would've been up in a second.

I just want a hungry QB by the time we get to College Station. I fear they will eat Quinn alive if he's in this current mode.

That frame you have there is about the best pass protection Quinn had all night.

Elko is a really good DC who disguises the pressure as good as anyone in the country.. this will really test Quinn. Sark will either have to adjust or figure out a way to counter the different looks.
Priority #1 Avoiding Turnovers.
Priority #2 Getting our Punter back.
If we can do those 2 things, I like our chances in most games. Our defense is pretty damn good.
All of this also points to the other option as well.. but I'll let Sark figure out how to make that work without a controversy.

Sark builds the whole game on progressions. Run 1 play here, 1 play here.. and ultimately he is setting up other plays later in the game..
When those first plays don't work, it completely screws up his gameplan, and he has a hard time adjusting to a different plan. We have only seen this one other time at Texas imo.
2021 vs Arkansas
We are light years better this year vs 2024.. so it isn't that we aren't ready for the SEC thing.. it's more.. Sark has to figure out a way to adjust when the other team has scouted him so well that his first set of plays aren't going to work the way he wants.
My idea that he will never see: Have another OC call plays for a series or two.. just to get away from some tendencies and to make the other coach think about the play call. I'm not sure exactly how this would work, but as an example..
If Milwee, Flood, or some other offensive coach could call a completely different set of plays out of the same formations that Sark uses.. I think it would add some depth to the packages..
Another idea I said a few weeks ago.. and one that I still think holds value.. Script a set of plays for Arch each game.. maybe the 3rd or 4th series of a game.. or a half.. Something that is different.
Wildcat. Go-Go. Option. Read option. Just a wrinkle or two that doesn't allow the defense to pin their ears back and just go.
I think a hurry up offense could also really help at times.
Sark is one of the best OC on the planet when things are clicking.. but he needs to figure out a way to work through the problems when it isn't clicking.. It would help to have a DT QB that could run out of some of the issues.. that isn't QE unfortunately.. and he is too fragile.

We'll get some type of protection blueprint this weekend. LSU should be able to do well in the trenches on offense. Like Rod Babers and others said, no one else has the linebacker talent UGA has.
