Good news on Smith Orogbo today, but getting concerned we not making more waves on DL and LB. I’m hoping Kenny Baker was the right hire.

247 recent crystal ball to Texas (in addition to Smith Orogbo):

DJ Sanders. 4-star DL. (On3 4-star)
Kade Phillips. 4-star DB (On3 4-star)”

Jonathan Cunningham. 4-star LB
Nathan Tilmon, 3-star S

Both On3 and 247 predict Riley Pettijohn 4-star LB (on3 5-star) to UT

DJ Sanders seems to be the only DL solid to possibly commit. Sounds like Brandon Brown is a good chance to flip but hopefully not. I guess worse case scenario we land someone in the portal, but surprised we'd have to go this route considering we just made the playoffs.

PFF ranks UT DL #8 in NCAA. They should be OK for this year.

I will wait till the actual signing day in December. Kenny baker has a season to show recruits that he can develop DL.

Seems like mixed messages on Pettijohn. OrangeBloods was saying Texas may be 4th option on his list.

Johnny Bowens III, Oregon Johnny Bowens III, a former four-star defensive tackle, has opted to enter the transfer portal, leaving the Oregon Ducks in pursuit of more snaps on the gridiron. Standing tall at 6’4” and 295 pounds, Bowens was heralded as the 206th top recruit nationally and the 23rd best defensive lineman in the 2023 class before donning the Oregon colors. His stint with the Ducks saw him hitting the field in just one game last season, where he managed to rack up a pair of tackles. Hailing from Converse, Texas, Bowens is looking to return to his roots. Landing in Austin with the Texas Longhorns wouldn’t come as a shock to those following his trajectory

It's still early and recruits have yet to see a product on the field from Kenny. I wouldn't read too much into it right now.

We seem to be doing decently everywhere but DT which is quickly headed to disaster territory with all our top targets (including Brandon Brown) expected to sign elsewhere.

I knew losing Bo wasn't going to be a great thing for us, but I didn't expect the effects to be this bad considering we arguably had the best two DT's in CFB last season. Portal may help a bit until Baker gets some skins on the wall, but so far in the portal era elite DT's hopping in are rare...unless they already know where they're going (Bear Alexander to the fightin' Lincolns)

Madden Faraimo got what he wanted out of official visits to Washington, Notre Dame and Texas, along with an unofficial to USC, but he may still need more time before he’s ready to make a final decision.

The Irish, Longhorns and Trojans are currently at the top of the J Serra Catholic standout’s list.

His interview with ND Irish Sports Daily

quote:

But Faraimo acknowledged that his official visit to Texas was eye-opening. “It was,” he said. “I was definitely not expecting that…It was definitely a great visit. “I think it was the access to the machinery and the equipment that they have in the nutrition, weight room, strength; the whole strength and conditioning program and how they use it. Some programs have the sciencey stuff and all that high-tech stuff, but they don't really use it to their full advantage. I feel like Texas' staff has a staff full of head strength coaches all on one staff working different things. It was just special to see that and see their philosophy behind the strength and conditioning and taking care of your body.”

I want to be optimistic about this, but the domers are by far the hardest when it comes to flipping kids who either commit there or dreamed of wearing the gold helmet when they were kids, especially if religion is involved. (Much like BYU)

J Serra Catholic head coach Victor Santa Cruz gives insight into star linebacker Madden Faraimo

quote:

He’s a very mature young man, who has a clear vision for what he’s looking for. There is a uniqueness for what Faraimo brings to the table. "He’s handled the recruiting process like a champ. It’s a testament to Madden and his family,” Santa Cruz told Irish Breakdown. "They have done a tremendous job raising him. He’s such a mature kid and he’s intentional with everything he does. His faith means a lot to him. His hard work means everything to him. Madden is really a unicorn.”

I share those same concerns.

Was losing Bo really that bad?

Yes, no other D-line coach has skins on the wall like Bo, or at least none that I know of. It's rare to have someone of his age and experience still at the position coach level. The really good ones give coordinator a shot at a lower profile program.

Baker simply doesn't have much to sell to recruits and their parents in spite of his short NFL stint. If I recall right he was an assistant D-line coach for the Dolphins, but not the main guy..and certainly not a household name even among NFL fans.

Well that's not good. You can always find athletes and playmakers. But you need those big boys to make it work.

Sark needs to figure it out real quick. Now is not the time to be going backwards.

Oregon transfer DL Johnny Bowens III commits to UTSA

quote:

Bowens, a native of Converse, Texas, which is just half hour northeast of the campus at UTSA, played high school football at Judson. He was a four-star prospect there as the No. 206 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also rated as a Top-25 DL in the class and a Top-40 prospect out of the state.

quote:

Bowens entered his name into the portal before the closing of the spring window. Upon his initial entry, other programs, including Texas, appeared interested in him

Yeah, I think that was my main concern too about Baker because he wasn’t the main DL coach at Miami. But, Miami had very good stats overall as a team.

Every other position sark has killed it in recruiting. But this DL recruiting is so worrisome. He has to get a few of them now or our second season in the sec is gonna be brutal.
