Why are men on the hook for financial care post-divorce (alimony)

Luckily in Texas there is no alimony requirement. In some instances the spouse may be required to pay spousal support depending on the circumstances, assuming the marriage lasted at least 10 years. I was married 10 years and 3 months at the time of my divorce, and I agreed to pay spousal maintenance for one year. This was not required, but I decided just to get it over with. My divorce was final 65 days after the day I filed, only due to my agreeing to almost all her requests. It was worth every penny!

I dated my ex for over 3 years

I'm going on 6 years with my current girlfriend and have no issues the whole time.

true story, my ex's mom and sister were on MY side throughout the ordeal

Mine were on my side but didn't sit on my side. I am still good friends with both sisters. One of them called me the other day to gripe about my ex's parental engagement.

its been over 2 decades for me so i don't want to revisit but your story is eerily similar to mine.

Very similar situation as yours with the exception of putting our children in danger. The first year following our divorce, my ex wife didn't work. I agreed to pay her spousal maintenance for one year; she cashed out my 401 (k), but I kept 100% of my pension. I kept a spreadsheet documenting who had custody every single day for 15 months. The spreadsheet showed that the boys were in my possession 60% of the time even though she was primary custodian. With that documentation, and visual support in the courtroom from about 10 other mothers from the community, I was awarded custody. My ex wife only had her mother and sister behind her during the trial.

I guess each and every one of you were perfect spouses and had fat bank accounts and your ex wives are all evil, crazy bitches.

This exactly explains my situation.

Young men, listen to this guy. My wife saved my life in many ways.

Be picky. Be patient and get it right. It’ll save a lot of pain in the long run. Looking back it’s always been obvious, but young men don’t think with their brains.

ETA: advice goes for young women too

Another piece of advice to young people: Date your significant other as long as you can before marrying. People have the ability to fool you for awhile, but their true personality traits will shine through if you give them enough time 3+ years minimum if you're not living together.

The court awarded him primary custody

I was awarded primary custody after filing a Petition to Modify. However, I requested no child support. I didn't want that selfish woman to have any ammunition against me for our kids, or the people of our town.

She was the problem
Not me and she admitted it after it was too late.

Exact same situation. My ex wife was a stay at home mom and didn't do shite. I woke the kids up for school, made their lunches, took them to school and picked them up, and did 90% of the cooking. And, she had the nerve to state that she needed a break and went on girl's trips at least twice a year. I finally had enough and got the hell out of there. In three months our divorce was final. Then a year later I took her back to court and was awarded custody of our two boys.

I now have been dating a woman 15 years younger than me who is the coolest woman on Earth. We haven't had a disagreement in 6 years and also she never bitches about a damn thing. We will be getting married two years from now after her son and my oldest graduate. My ex has spiraled downhill even further these last couple of years to the point the boys haven't been to her house in months. And, she only lives 3.5 miles from me.

Most of the divorces in my friend groups are women filing for pretty understandable reasons

Most of the women I have seen who initiated divorce have done so for non understandable reasons. They may have friends who are divorced who tell them they deserve better and have an unreasonable level of self worth. They are told how pretty they are by their friends and they can do so much better. In the end, a lot of those women regret their decision and end up with no one. However, the ones that are truly hot usually do end up in a better position.

Don't really care. Only care about the upcoming season.

I actually passed a field sobriety test once and I was fricking hammered

Same. I was working on fences all day and had about 17-20 beers. I got pulled over on a dirt road and told him I had 4-5 beers. The one thing that saved me was during the pen test. I quit following the pen at about 45-50 degrees. A Game Warden friend told me that when you are intoxicated you will follow the pen too far and start moving your head. Additionally, you will strain your eyes following the pen too far and your eyeballs will start to shake.

I do this at least 3x a week. In college we called 24 oz "2x4's". At home I drink 1x2's.

Fiancé is 15 years younger. And, before anyone labels me a pedo, I am 52.

I know people who have used a joint lawyer and it worked fine. If you can both agree on the separation of assets, child support (or none), and custody schedule you are wasting money by getting separate attorneys. If there is any disagreement in those three areas then don't.
