Are you working for the university or going to grad school?
People love to dump on BCS as a place to live but it's cheap as shite and has a lot of the stuff you would find in a bigger town without the traffic or crime.
As far as stuff to do find Pigimus thread on here, there was some good stuff in there

Welcome
College Station is really not a bad place to live and the proximity to Houston, DFW, Austin, and SA make it even better.
I'll make a list of things to do when I get home this evening.

Very cool. Enjoy what you do for a living because beyond all the good low cost and bad BFE comments enjoying what you do is easy to come by in CS. Don't get too Internet stupid in Longhorn hate because, even though the Internet dweebs won't say it, it makes you look less knowledgeable. Welcome to town!

Could someone please remove Randolph Duke (Eyeareag) from this board?

Welcome. If you don't work for the university and are not a student, live as far away from campus as you can because of traffic.
Lake Somerville and Lake Conroe are not too far and are nice lakes. The Shiner brewery is about 1,5 hours away and it is a good day trip. You are also close to Snowe's BBQ in Lexington. Houston is good for your big city fix. And skip Galveston and come on down to Port Aransas when you need your coastal time.
There is a lot to do. Enjoy!

Galveston is the home of our sister campus, Texas A&M University at Galveston. From their website:
quote:They neglected to mention the numerous bars replete with cheap booze, the loose women, and the excellent fishing opportunities that help define my beautiful island home. We even have a Waffle House, for those that care in such matters.
Campus life is enhanced by the cultural and social activities in Galveston. Galveston Island was once the financial center of the South. Today, the city has become a major tourist center with a strong representation of marine and maritime interests. College dances have been held in the Ashton Villa Ballroom (a restored 1859 mansion), in the Garten Verein (a restored octagonal dancing pavilion in Kempner Park) and aboard the Elissa and the Colonel. The Grand 1894 Opera House, the Lone Star Amphitheater and other local theaters allow TAMUG students involvement in theater events. The new Moody Gardens Conference Center boasts the Southwest’s finest 3-D Digital IMAX theater and a unique tropical garden pyramid biome. The city has several historical districts, museums and musical groups including the Galveston Symphony Orchestra and the Galveston Beach Band.
Also,
I hate to bore you out-of-towners with a little history and culture, but I wish to extend a Happy Juneteenth to everyone including our Ole Miss brothers:
quote:Origins of Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 18, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. On June 19, standing on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa, Granger read the contents of "General Order No. 3":
"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere."
That day has since become known as Juneteenth, a name coming from a portmanteau of the word June and the suffix, "teenth", as in "Nineteenth", coined by 1903. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.
