If we enter the Auburn game 9-0 with no close games, I will feel better about going 1-2 in that 3-game stretch.
09/05 - Abilene Christian
09/12 - North Texas
09/19 - Colorado
09/26 - vs Arkansas
10/03 - at Mississippi State
10/10 - Fresno State
10/17 - at Auburn
10/24 - at South Carolina
10/31 - bye
11/07 - Ole Miss
11/14 - Vanderbilt
11/21 - at Alabama
11/28 - LSU
Can't be 9-0 going into Auburn when they are game 7.

There are a lot of question marks that will determine A&M's success next year, and Mond isn't even in the Top 3
- What is Elko's status? Without him, going to be a lot harder
- Blades shoulder. If fixed, the secondary can be dominant. If not ...
- New OL. We should have a MUCH different OL next year, as the redshirts should be pushing for playing time with both talent and experience
I'd put Mond at number four. But, on the plus side
- Demas will provide speed and separation at the WR
- Anaias will provide speed in the slot
- Achane provides a REAL special teams threat
- Cupp will be back, so the running game should be WAY better with two great TE's to help out
- all those awesome fish will be sophomores
Now, if A&M goes 10-2 or better next year as expected, there will be a drop-off in 2021, because Elko is going to get a HC job. His defense will be the reason. You will also see some changes to offense after Mond leaves, especially at QB. It isn't a coincidence that both Calzada and King can take snaps under center and don't have to be taught that part of the game

Good assessment.
If we are paying Jimbo an obscene amount of money, why can't we pony up for Elko and keep him indefinitely?
Re: the OL. I want to believe that Jimbo was holding the younger talent back to save eligibility, but I also have a creeping suspicion that they are not as talented as advertised, which means we will be even more muh on offense next season.

I'm sure we can, but I don't think we should. Have his defenses really warranted such a move? We have yet to crack the Top 25 in Total and Scoring Defense.

Total Defense
Sumlin's final year (through his firing) - 60th (388.7 ypg)
Year 1 (through 12 games) - 37th (356.5 ypg)
Year 2 - T32 (340.8 ypg)
Scoring Defense
Sumlin's final year (through his firing) - 81st (28.7 ppg)
Year 1 (through 12 games) - 58th (26.3 ppg)
Year 2 - T36 (22.7 ppg)
Elko reached top 10 in both categories in his 3rd year at Wake Forest.

Those stats still don't warrant a ridiculous offer to lock him in to A&M.

Even when weighed against how horrible our offense is?

You definitely have to take that into consideration

If anything, it should be held against him. Our offense isn't great, but it's also not leaving the defense out in the field for most of the game like Sumlin did.

Wait...what? The defense basically won the Ole Miss game and nearly won the Georgia game when the offense couldn't do more than a 3 and out. If anything, the defenses under Sumlin had no excuse because there was no pressure to win the game by themselves.

So you don't think we should take into account that the offense is built to eat up the clock???

They still don't warrant "lock him down" money.

LSU is on another level. Doubling down on my agreement with burning the tape. Thank god Burrow is gone next year when we have a real shot at winning something.

It was lock him down money or let him go. Would you rather have let him go?

Personally, I let him go. His defenses have not warranted the money he is making at the moment. His stats have never really been impressive outside of one year at Wake Forest.
Should we be paying a DC over 2 Million? Sure. Should it be Elko? No. I'm just not buying his hype.

More importantly, who would we get that would instantly improve the defense with a brand new system in his first year?
Posted on 12/7/19 at 7:32 pm to Texas Weazel
I think Elko is the best coach at A&M in a very long time. Get him some real speed in the back 7 & 1 guy with elite edge speed and watch out. The fact that we had solid defenses with what we have trotted out at DE, CB, & S is impressive.
I love that he recruits the best players he can get regardless of geography. There is a chance Jones is the only Texas kid in the 2020 class on defense. Craziness, in a good way.
Pay the man (someone else's $ of course). I'd make a fine liberal.
