He isn't really, that's the point.

Either would be a great hire, but both of those guys would likely be hoping to land a HC job down the road.

I actually think Spurrier is the best comparison to what we fell into with Chavis, although I don't think it will happen.

That's why I said closest. The Spurrier thing is seriously going to make me stop following A&M football for a few months

I honestly think there's a better chance of us firing Sumlin than hiring Spurrier as our OC. It's so patently ridiculous. His offense isn't even similar to what we run now at all, aside from the other obvious reasons why it would never happen

In some fantasy land where Spurrier is a possibility, I don't see this as a problem at all. Not even sure I agree with it (only because I have no clue what we're trying to accomplish on O). But we're a shotgun spread team, with moving OL in the run game. People more adept at analyzing offensive systems could probably help out here, but Spurrier did a lot of somewhat similar things. It wouldn't be anything like transitioning to a traditional 2 back, under center offense (a la Stanford/LSU)

A very valid point.

Kiffin may be the closest to a Chavis hire, but even he is going to entertain the right HC offers. I'm not sure what his timeline is, but I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't in a hurry to get back out as a HC.

Figured I'd put this here, too. Thoughts?

Hey, I thought the only reason Alleva stood firm on the Les Miles clause and let Chavis walk was because he wanted to replace the Mad Hatter and didn't want to prevent the new HC from having the freedom to pick his own staff.

But it turns out that Miles is staying, and we legit pulled Chavis out of Baton Rouge.

If Richt is serious about wanting to be an OC, I honestly can't think of a better place for him to end up than here. He would have tons of talent, a boss who would let him do his own thing, and a defensive unit he knows he can depend on.

I've never really followed Georgia, has he been some sort of offensive mastermind in the past?

Not familar with Richt as an offensive guru. How do yall think he would fit in with A&M's system or would we have to change philosophy? If we have to change, do we have the personnel to run his sytle?

Richt was OC for FSU before becoming HC at UGA

quote:

Under Richt’s direction, Florida State had some of college football's most explosive offenses. In his seven years as offensive coordinator the Seminoles ranked in the nation’s top five scoring offenses on five occasions, were top twelve in total offense five times and top twelve in passing offense five times. The 2000 Seminoles offense finished the regular season ranked first nationally in total offense (549.0 yards per game), first in passing offense (384.0 ypg) and third in scoring offense (42.4 points per game).

During his tenure as an assistant coach at Florida State, Richt coached two Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke respectively and was part of two national championships (1993 and 1999).[3]

Was OC under bowden when FSU was kicking everyone's asses in the 90s. Has had a lot of good offenses at UGA, been successful at recruiting elite QBs across nation (Stafford from TX, Murray from FL, Eason from Washington)

We could definitely do a lot worse

He has always run a more traditional offense, leans heavy on RBs. Maybe if you get Whaley to go along with Ford, the transition isn't too too bad. But I don't think we're set up to run his offense. And it would go against the types of offenses Sumlin has been a part of since he entered the profession.

Think the exact opposite of what Sumlin ran at Houston and with Manziel at aTm.

And maybe he could finally help us break into the Georgia talent pipeline that Sumlin's been so desperately trying to tap.

We have an o line who's run blocking is worse than our d line's run stopping and you wanna bring in a traditional pro set run OC
