My post-sobering up thoughts from the game

First of all, what an awesome day. The tailgating at Reliant was well coordinated and the stadium was a great experience as far as neutral site games go.
Second, word to the young among us: Enjoy the days of bouncing back immediately after a day of rage drinking. Those go away quickly after college and today was less fun
Now, onto the game itself. John Chavis was worth every damn penny. I have criticized Sumlin a lot, but he knew his team's deficiency and went out and got the very best there is to fix it. The defense, against what has been an elite offense every year under Todd Graham, was nothing short of incredible. ASU had 10 points that they actually drove the field for. I enjoy being at the games because it lets me watch the DB/WR play downfield and our corners and safeties are like night and day from a year ago. ASU fans are upset they didnt throw downfield, but it was because our corners and especially safeties were damn near perfect beyond 15 yards. The over the top coverage from Watts and Evans was beautiful to watch live. Watts especially has such incredible range and cut off so many post and corner routes downfield.
Myles Garret and Daeshon Hall are both future top-15 picks. QBs will be filing restraining orders against those two this year. It wouldnt shock me at all to be the first team in the modern era to have two players with 15 sacks in a season. Garrett had three he wasnt credited for either because of grounding or because his momentum from behind helped the QB push the ball out as he was going down. We could have easily had about 12-13 sacks.
The offensive line was better than ASU's but not by much. Kyler and Allen being more mobile than Bercovici was the main difference. In their defense, ASU blitzed at least 70% of the time and crashed eight men down into the run almost every first down. We'll see if this was just a good front seven in the coming weeks.
Jake Spavital continues to underwhelm. I like being committed to the run game, but there is a difference between commitment and stubborness. He also continues to refuse to utilize the middle of the field, which was WIDE OPEN thanks to the blitz. Its like we have no concept of hot routes and blitz recognition.
I wouldnt read too much into the receivers other than Kirk having bad nights, they were open and we just didnt get them the ball because of gameplanning and the blitz. Speedy I saw ran two go routes where the safety left the corner on an island and he was wide open for six.
Kirk looked like Bo Jackson on Techmo Bowl. Wasnt touched on those TDs and made a major conference FBS defense look like seventh graders. We have this guy for three whole seasons, holy shite. By 2017 he will be a Heisman contender.
Murray is fast and runs just like Manziel, but Allen is clearly the better passer right now. Murray was very jittery and nervous throwing the ball.
Special teams was top notch in every way, especially punting and kick coverage.
Overall, a very encouraging night. If Spav can get it together, this is a legit top-10 caliber team that is very capable of making noise in the West.

My hangover was (is) of the delayed-onset variety. Was fine this morning and most of the drive back to SA, but that telltale headache started creeping up on me around noon. Now I'm lying in bed with a splitting headache trying not to move
oh, and my voice is still completely gone

I'd like to see the QBs and receivers work on their timing during practice and these couple of easy games. Spav could add a tight end to short yardage. Otherwise, fantastic first game. It feels great to be this good of a team again.

Agree with entire post, especially the above two.
Would also like to take a moment and Spotlight Donovan Wilson's disruptive presence. he made himself known that's for sure. It was great watching guys fly to the ball, and even more fun to see that once asu receivers made a catch we usually had someone right up on them instead of a five-ten yard cushion.

Yesterday, one of my cousins said that Spavital should be coaching junior-high, single-A, six-man football somewhere deep in West Texas. He was correct.

Spavital is a huge ? for me. Why is he still OC?
Throughout his tenure, Sumlin has been really good at addressing problems. Clarence sucks? Demoted. Kenny Trill's a druggie locker room cancer? Benched. Replaced by a freshman. Synder sucks? Fired. Hired best college DC on earth.
But Spav??? The guys is clearly not cutting it, but Sumlin isn't doing anything. I dunno why... are they best friends forever? Does he have nudie pics of Summy?

None of those guys you mentioned signed three straight 5* QBs
I am not a fan of his play calling either but that buys you some serious leash

To some extent, you have a point. But demote him to QB coach, pay him what is necessary to keep him, and hire a qualified OC. Hell, hire another guy, name them co-Coordinator, and limit Spavital's authority to QBs and recruiting.
BTW, you'll need a new pic of the Chief. Old Kyle looks a bit odd now that I drive past the new one several times per week.

I would be fine with this but he might not. Other schools would come after him if we demoted him.

This. From what I could see, play calling was pretty much the same as last year for most of the night, just replace bubble screen with inside run. Granted: There was very little time to throw for both QBs, so deep passing was pretty much out of the question.
The one time we ran a screen pass (which my limited football knowledge says is what you do to constantly blitzing defenses) it worked very, very well. Why was it only once?
The best play by far was a bubble screen to Kirk for his huge run. We did several of those, and against a better secondary, they don't get that far. Same story as USC last year.
Other than the exceptional run by Kirk, the punt return, and the final drive where we had already ripped out their heart, it was like looking at the same offense from last year. (EDIT: Actually, I thought again about how we played in the 4th quarter last year, and that was usually when we would open up the playbook and throw downfield. So in that sense, it was EXACTLY like last year. We have changed nothing except we now run on 1st and 2nd down, up the middle, come hell or high water). And I don't think those qualifiers are unfair to add. The defense won this game for us. The offense couldn't get short yardage when they needed to, and the OL looks awful. Hopefully they gel before MSU/Arky and we can get some time for Allen to throw, but I'm shaking my head wondering if we're about to see a repeat of last year's offense, just instead of 3 bubble screens-punt, it's going to be 2 inside runs-bubble screen-punt.

I am extremely critical of Spav
But
To be fair the spring ball and fall were against Chavis D, and ASU was no easy D to face either, we should be grateful the O looked as good as they did.
I owing grab up my pitchfork until after the tune up games and Arky
And remember this, we probably will keep the offense somewhat vanilla until Arky, which can be good and bad
