Count me in as top 5. Expectations will be ridiculous if we finish #1.

we seem to be in really good early shape for wease, williams now that we brought in elko, and green. not to mention with guys in the next tier like curry and stripling and osafa mensah
i think we have a great shot at a top 5 class

Wease Whittington Nana and Stripling seem like really strong bets to be Ags. Land one of Williams or Green and hold on to Gunnell (get Curry in the process) and that is a ton of talent right there at the top of the class

its nice to see that LSU doesnt really seem to be out in front for anyone major in texas right now as well. which is a nice change

Will we have a top 5 class in 2019?
i sure hope so, or very close to it anyway. that's why this staff exists imho. so assuming we have at least an average win/loss record i'm expecting this staff to 'croot lights out.

Montgomery is DL/Associate head coach LINK

Jimbo Fisher and Mike Elko have added Green Bay Packers d-line coach Jerry Montgomery to the Aggie defensive staff. Montgomery, who will split the d-line duties with Terry Price in a similar DT/DE situation as the Ags have used the past three years, was an ace recruiter for Bob Stoops at OU and at Michigan prior to moving on to the NFL two years ago. Big-time, big-time hire for Fisher and the Aggies. Fisher and A&M just ripped away the defensive line coach from one of the most storied franchises in American sports. Can't wait to see how Fisher and the Ags can go out and sell THAT to recruits.
Montgomery is a guy who I can remember meeting several years ago shortly after he interviewed with Kevin Sumlin when he was at Houston way back when. At the time, Jerry was essentially getting his start at Wyoming and was considered a rising star. He ultimately turned down Houston for a spot at Indiana under Kevin Wilson but was then quickly made an offer he couldn't refuse from Brady Hoke and Michigan. Once in Ann Arbor, the young assistant and former Iowa defensive tackle emerged as one of the nation's top young recruiters. Bob Stoops took notice, convincing Montgomery to join him in Norman two years later (and after seeing his defense humiliated by none other than Johnny Football and the Aggies in the 2012 Cotton Bowl). In two years at OU, Jerry earned the reputation as one of the Big 12's best recruiters and was considered by Stoops to be one of the best defensive hires he made during his 17-year tenure in Norman. The reason
Montgomery is considered an outstanding technical coach who has the rare ability to recruit elite level talent and then motivate and develop them once they're on campus. He has the rep of putting players on the field who are talented and play with tremendous effort and technique. As far as d-line hires go, this one is about as good as the Aggies could have hoped for and they turned down interest from some pretty big names along the way.
In related news, I have confirmed (yet again) that Terry Price is remaining on staff. That's not breaking news and it's what I've said ever since Coach Fisher made the decision to keep the longtime A&M and SEC assistant on board.
The Ags will split the d-line duties just as they have over the past three years - Price will coach the defensive ends and Montgomery the defensive interior. I know certain schools have tried to strike fear into several A&M commits and targets by saying that TP won't be back (despite what Price Fisher continue to tell recruits, some seem nervous about whether or not this is actually happening) but the defensive staff announcement should come soon enough (as in the next few days), which should clear up any lingering doubt or confusion.
Finally, I'm also hearing that the Ags could be getting more good news later today, as it sounds like Notre Dame assistant Clark Lea is likely to leave South Bend to join Mike Elko in College Station. If that plays out as expected, Jimbo Fisher will be one hire away from completing his Texas A&M coaching staff (at least the on-field portion).

Sorry, but isn't this pure spin? Aren't the Packers hiring a new defensive staff?

What other duties besides DL does Montgomery have under his Associate Head Coach/DL title? Is that kind of like the Executive Officer to the Commanding Officer (to use a military analogy)?

Yes. He was not retained.

Yes. Still a great hire IMO

Seriously, the recruiting chops of this staff is insane. Easily a T5 class next year.

I agree. I like the hire a lot.

Jerry Schmidt is in town with Brewster. Looks like we're taking him away from his longtime home @ OU.
