I think Coach Sumlin was just frustrated at the combination of that penalty, Hall being ejected for punching, and Everett ejected for "targeting". It all happened towards the end and it came out on a question asked specifically about JFF.
I agree with this. JFH does need to keep his head on straight, but not a big deal individually. Those three things put together were very disappointing.

It amazes me that after everything Johnny has had to deal with this offseason, he can walk right out on that field and turn those distractions on/off like a light switch. Some guys are game changers, and it's a totally different game with him in it.

You scream drunken remote control warrior. We're you at the game? Did you not see Rice players getting in JFF and other players faces all game with shite talk? You didn't see the guy Johnny got flagged on talking trash the whole way? You didn't see Johnny and at same player talk and shake hands after the game?
No. Of course you didnt. You were too busy being an idiot in the Rant to pay attention.

I did. Every player from every team will be doing that to him all year. He can either get over it or react like he did today.

Point is Rice had guys talking shite to our players all game long. Johnny was not the only player who talked shite back either. Malena was talked shite back more than anyone.
It's also nice that you completely ignore how rediculous it was for JFF to get a taunting penalty for turning around to chirp at a guy who was following him talking smack the whole way.

But he IS the only Heisman winning player who talked back, and because of that he's the only one who will get any attention for it. Just like a scrub A&M player wouldn't get any media attention for getting thrown out of a frat party or tweeting stupid shite.
Johnny IS a Heisman winner and is the face of our program. The same standards that apply to all the other players don't apply to him and he has to learn that.

As an outsider looking in, I don't think it was all that bad. JFF is a kid that plays high on emotion and adrenaline. He has dealt with a lot of crap this off season. Some deserved, some not. Some brought on himself, some not. Regardless, it culminated in his emotions and adrenaline running higher today coming in during the 2nd half of a game than it might have if he had had a full game suspension. While I think he'll always play with high emotion and adrenaline (and you want him to), I think some of the antics will come under control.
Good win today Aggies!!!

The Mizzou guy here gets it. Don't get lost in the ESPN drama. In the end you have Johnny not putting up with some shite talk and getting flagged for it. Meh. The game was not in doubt and Johnny plays with fire. He will learn to tone it down a notch. Not a big deal.
Johnny is who he is, you have to take the whole package.

Well said.

I don't really have a problem with any of his antics. He did the same exact thing last year, and it's what he thrives on. The only thing I didn't like was him walking past sumlin after the penalty.
He plays with a chip on his shoulder, I don't want him to change that. Just be smart about it and don't pick up unnecessary penalties.

Without the whole package, he's not nearly as good as he is. We had to deal with it with Phil Pressey in basketball. Same for Ole Miss and Marshall Henderson in basketball. All obviously different situations and different people, but all came with other baggage or issues but those things also helped to make them as good as they are. Enjoy the ride while it lasts. He's a once in a generation type talent.

quote:which has been my stance from the get go. i want him to have the attitude that he did yesterday. it shows that he isnt being complacent and actually gives a shite. none of this is new, there was shite talking in the sam houston game last year, he did the money thing after every touchdown he scored, etc. its just now people have decided that its a big deal. when its something he has always been doing

My issue isn't with the shite talking so much as it is with the extent of it IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS
The rules are different for Manziel. It sucks, but its the reality. He has to know how he will be judged by taking stuff that far on the field. It just shocked me that he has so little situational awareness. The fact that the game was out of hand is irrelevant.

Because IT IS just now a big deal. It wasn't a big deal before he was a Heisman winner and his every move was critiqued. It wasn't a big deal before he was in a negative spotlight for his actions all offseason. It wasn't a big deal before he had JUST gotten past an incident that could have cost us our season.
Like it or not, the rules have changed. People are treating this like its a big deal now BECAUSE IT IS. Nobody cared if Manziel got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct last September. Now they do and it's just the way it is. Is it fair? No, but he has to have better awareness and realize that the biggest game in our history is two weeks away and creating an aura of defiance in which everyone thinks your team, your coach and yourself are at odds is just dumb.
I myself didn't even care until I realized that Sumlin was visibly annoyed (at best) by it all.

quote:and im happy he still did it and it is still the same manziel. correct me if im wrong, but you seem to be in the camp that manziel is out of control and sumlin needs to punish him. i steadfastly disagree with that notion. this was his first game back after the most idiotic off season a single player has ever had and was letting off steam. i dont care that he had an outburst in his very first game back when you consider all the shite that he has had to put through. granted a good portion of it he deserved. still, i wont be worried unless he a similar out burst against sam houston

I don't think Manziel is out of control, I think he needs to not talk so much shite to a Rice scrub when its only going to end poorly.
Posted on 9/1/13 at 3:47 pm to Roger Klarvin
well then we have a fundamental disagreement on the issue. i will always support our football players talking shite. we need that type of attitude to our team. manziel may have gone a little overboard but you can chalk that up to the circumstance surrounding the game. i dont expect him to do it again. but i fully support him, and other members of the team, talking shite to the opposition
