The '14 defensive class is chock full of elite guys we'll never have to sweat: Garrett, Cunningham, Johnson, Alaka, Walker, Washington. These are honor society, church goin' types that just aren't going to be problems.

Really great to hear.
I'll pray that these young men serve as leaders and examples to their teammates.
Nothing can replace a loving home and family, but solid role models don't suck.
Thanks for the insight, tmc94.

You always want the best players you can get. But there's a line you don't want to cross.

Agreed, I joke about it but I don't REALLY want to be thug U. The school and brand deserves better.

With that said, I am happy we take risks if the alternative is a less talented (and competitive) team. Give me a top 25 team of risks over an irrelevant team of "Good Ags" any day, even if it means incidents like this put some egg on our face when the risk doesn't pan out. I feel like for a long time too much of our fanbase was too uptight about players, as if they were trying to copy Texas's holier than thou attitude. Freaking Baylor lets players get away with murder, no reason WE need to be the high water mark in the state.

Another part of this is that I feel A&M can be a stabilizing force for people. It was for me. The entire culture is a good influence. One reason I like Von so much is that he was a wild child like myself, then like me he bought into Aggieland and it paid off.

I don't want to us to avoid all the risks, because we also avoid possibly being a stabilizing influence on the lives of these young men (better than they will get on 6th street or in red stick). Not everyone will be an NFL player, but being an Aggie gives you SOME path to a career and a respectable life. I want that net to extend to as many groups of Texans as possible.

I am sad in this instance because both players contributed and had amazing potential. When we got the Golden commit it felt like we "made it," seeing as how he is the type of DT talent that avoided A&M for a decade.

With another stacked class between now and then, and another on the way, this is less critical than it would have been a few years ago. So I am happy we took the risk, we could take it.

According to the Probable Cause Statement, Mostafa El-Guindy says a friend gave him Claiborne’s cell phone number. He texted Claiborne and told him they wanted to buy marijuana. El-Guindy says Claiborne and Golden tried to get him and one of his roommates, Chase Halpin, to come to the Zone Apartments on Holleman Drive. But Halpin had been told that some football players had been ripping off people at the Zone Apartments and that one of them was named either Elijah or Isaiah. So, they asked Claiborne and Golden to meet them at Lakeridge Townhomes.

Halpin says Claiborne and Golden brought over a small sample of marijuana to see if they liked it. Claiborne asked to see the money first. When Halpin took out the $1,500, he says Golden stuck a gun in his face and said “Don’t move.” But their other roommate, Joseph Dwyer, stood up and Halpin says Golden hit Dwyer in the face with the gun, knocking him down to the couch.

Halpin says Golden then grabbed the cash and El-Guindy’s cell phone. Claiborne and Golden then ran towards the Zone Apartments, where Halpin and El-Guindy went to call 911 to report the robbery.

Police sent another officer to check on Dwyer’s injury. When the officer knocked on the door, he saw Dwyer lying on the couch, trying to hide drugs and paraphernalia. But he didn’t put it all away before opening the door.

Police found prescription pills, hashish and marijuana inside the apartment. Halprin, El-Guindy and Dwyer were arrested and charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

well, if the report is correct, they'd been doing this for a while and someone finally called the police. If that's true, they are both fricked.

It's really sad. The things I'd heard about Golden were he was impressionable and had run with the wrong crowd in the past. Claiborne was described to me as a "straight thug" so it didn't surprise me. I really thought Golden got his life together with rehab but it seems he was just lying to everyone.

If true, they can rot in prison.

So basically Golden's plan assumed their victim would have an ounce of sense.

Those legal fees will be more than $1500.

Not trying to justify anything but damn.

I'm glad they got caught after seeing the information.

I can't imagine the cancerous effect on the locker room if they had gotten away with it.

Yeah, this part, in particular, throws Golden's plan out the window:

Getting caught by the po po is honestly the best case scenario with what they were doing. You keep doing that and eventually you will do it to the wrong person and they will come back at you, and somebody ends up dead

Pretty stupid. But in the end it is good for the program that they sacrificed themselves to turn these guys in. If these two got to thinking robbing other kids was easy money and bragged about it maybe others could have gotten sucked in.

The prosecutor will probably agree to dismiss the charges in exchange for their testimony. It still may be tough to get a conviction (a jury may not have much sympathy for three drug users getting theirs in a drug deal gone bad, plus the credibility issue that a defense attorney could use against them).

But yes, don't need these types around your locker room.

Well, this ain't exactly the perfect crime considering if they had flushed their shite after calling 911 instead of trying to hide it (wtf you dumbasses) they wouldn't have even picked up the possession charges.

They certainly had an ounce of something.

Golden and Claiborne were smart to stick with robbing college kids. Some of the people I know from my younger years in Bryan would not have had the cops handle this.

Maybe we need Yemi to come talk to the team.

Agreed. These two fools are lucky they didn't rob the product of one of the Mexican cartels operating in the region.
