New Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ list is out.

TOP 50 list

Yall take a look and lets debate on it. Definitely some interesting choices in the top 10, lots of new joints. Truth is my personal favorite in state so I'm glad to see them in there at #3 overall.

Also, its weird to me but it's like bbq pitmasters are becoming more hipstery by the year. Used to be just Aaron Franklin's goofy self but now they're all over. Take a look at the new #1 joint Goldees and the pic of all the owners/cooks. They look like they should be in an advertisement for Urban Outfitters, not the lead cooks for the best smoked meat in the state of Texas....

Texas monthly has never been a good source for ranking barbecue places.

But I love having a list like that, and I’m gonna start working my way through it one bite at a time LOL

There are places on there I’ve never even heard of, Olton,Texas?

Eh, I dont like TM for their politics these days but as far as putting a list together like this I dont know anybody else that does a better job. Certainly better than the random NY Times type of lists where they pick 3 random spots from Texas out and say its their best bbq list.

The little blurb on the side says they send 32 staffers and some freelance people around, unannounced to the various places and rank them, and then the two main people follow up to confirm rankings. I dont know how else you'd cover that much ground and that many places across the state.

Burnt Bean in Seguin is legit for those of you in central Texas that can make it down there. Dude knows what hes doing, I've got a follow up trip with some friends scheduled in November but now the line will be even longer than the first time.

It’s definitely one I’m gonna hit in the next week or so, I just left central market in Schulenburg where I had a pretty darn good brisket sandwich FYI
As I was leaving, the old-timers started talking Jimbo football and worrying about Jimbo going to LSU, I told them it was impossible because LSU was broke and then left LOL

Yeah they are only Thursday through Sunday. A lot of places in the top 50 are like that, only open 2-4 days a week. Try to hit them again on a day they’re open, so dang good.

This guy is a bbq photographer that contributed to the TX Monthly list, he has a handy spreadsheet you can use to see days they’re open and hours of operation, along with a link to their website if they have one. Useful reference if you’re planning a stop somewhere.

I noticed that it is truth in Houston that is ranked number three, I wonder if their brisket is better than truth and Brenham? Because there’s no way truth in Brenham should be ranked above LJ’s

I think it more depends on where the owner is cooking that day. I’ve heard he still bounces back and forth between the two, but spends more time in Houston now and I think he does the best job. Also they picked Houston because they have a bigger menu there, they do whole hog on saturdays, brisket boudin, and some extra sides as well.

You like LJs? I had it once and wasn’t super impressed. It wasn’t bad, but didn’t feel like top 50 bbq to me. 1775 over here in Snook is wayyyy better and they didn’t make the list.

Thanks for that link. A list with the addresses I can easily plug into a map is exactly what I was looking for yesterday when I was scrolling the Tm list. And he's already got it mapped there.

So it seems the rant has found Flight of the Great Pumpkin. It seems they have scaled way back on the melee it used to be.

It wasn't a melee our zip year. We basically helped C2 give the PNS a giant middle finger.

That fricker even threatened MY commission because I spoke out against him on texags.

I didn't remember that occurring. I do remember our zip year me and several others making sure the drill field was not invaded during flight.

Only the C2 zips marched our senior year. Ask Derward and Marilyn if you need to verify. Mark made sure no frickery happened with the Drill Field.

No I believe you in how it went down. Did they do away with Flight completely after that? A BQ on the mil board of TA swears it was not a thing when he was there (00-04)

I don't think it came back until '07(?).

I still remember us standing on each side of the grass as C2 passed towards Dorm 11. No one said a word.
