We will be better able to make an assessment in a few weeks after the portal slows down. But losing Robinson is a terrible precedent

It's not good. And combined with all the other losses, it hurts even more. You can't continue to lose building blocks.

At the same time, every one sees what's happening in college basketball. It's completely normal now for guys to just bail at the drop of a hat. We've got a promising young center on our team who went through the exact same thing. If this was a one way street and we only had guys going out, it would be really concerning. But it's happening in both directions, we're losing guys who just got here and we're getting guys who left places they just arrived at.

Eight scholarship players in one month. There’s no positive spin here.

3 of those would be out of eligibility in any non-Covid year

That comment was in response to Jaxson Robinson setting a bad precedent.

Agree that 8 guys in one month is a bad look for a struggling program.

Landed Henry Coleman, a freshman transfer from Duke. 4 star guy that barely played this year.

Interesting. I was told Buzz was not cut out for this new CBB environment, seems like he isn't dead just yet

I've never followed NCAA basketball much. Has something changed recently that makes all of these transfers normal? I don't recall the being this much turnover in the past... But honestly I never paid much attention.

Within the past few years, the NCAA created the transfer portal that destigmatized the transfer process and a lot of guys have used the opportunity to find better playing situations. At the same time, coaches have used the transfer portal to "encourage" more players to seek playing time elsewhere.

Then, as mentioned, covid precautions led to a unique opportunity where anyone could transfer for any reason and immediately become eligible. At the same time, the NCAA said everyone gets a free year of eligibility, putting additionial stress put on rosters/rotations.

Then as a final hurrah, the NCAA created a new permanent rule saying you get a free one-time transfer.

Add it all up and the dynamics around roster building has been completely upended. 10 years ago, a transfer or two was not abnormal. Then early in Billy Kennedy's tenure, it became common for 2-3 guys leave each year, alongaode those graduating.

Now, every program is seeing 3-4 guys leave, some 6-7, some schools have seen their entire roster leave. It's really weird and will take some adjusting to.

Thanks for explaining y'all. That makes sense. I wonder then if it will start to die down a little w/o the covid transfer and the extra eligibility. Otherwise, I'd probably just change my strategy to picking sophomores from the portal instead of going HS. Kinda like the kids from UCONN and Duke approach. Didn't get playing time, ok come here and build with us

It will slow down a little bit, but it's going to be wild from this point forward.

I think a lot of non-traditional power schools will look to utilize this strategy. It used to be that only schools like Iowa State that did not have the ability to recruit highly rated HS guys would use this route to find good players, but now a bunch of schools are doing it. Baylor won a title with this strategy.

One thing to note is all the guys coming into A&M this year are eligible immediately, but they would have to sit out a year if they transfer. That makes it somewhat less likely that they will transfer again. So this will contribute to some slowing of transfers across the nation next year and beyond.
