Yeah I've heard the OU/Venables stories. Even aside from his race, you can tell he has a natural ability for sales, which was perfect with the timing of the conference move. It seems like every commit is buying into playing in the SEC while staying in TX. They all talk about it after they commit. I think a lot of that is a product of Sumlin being great at selling it more than them truly realizing the benefits and making their own decision
A lot of our fans seem to act like it was this great destiny where we would get every recruit because of switching conferences, but I think we sell Sumlin short by doing that

I just think its hilarious in hindsight how the sips played down the SEC switch and Sumlin were worth.

It's unreal how everything that has happened has been the direct opposite of their talking points during realignment

I'm gone for the day and this happens.... goddamn
Too awesome for words. But frick Texas. Mack Brown had this type of success for years and we had to make do. Now it's our time. Karma's a bitch

Agree with you Roger. The sips can hide behind the liberal culture of Austin. A&M traditionally has a culture more in line with what minorities in Texas tend to shy away from. My freshman year at A&M there was a hate video "prank" that went viral and was completely unacceptable. One of my roommates throughout college was black and if not for an academic scholarship he would have gone elsewhere. What he describes as 21st century conservative racism. Luckily my group of friends from CS was different than that and we had a good time. Things are not what they were in the 80's when my father was an Aggie and Sumlin is a great ambassador for conveying that change. Having a heart attack every time we played Tech is why I wanted a high octane offensive system. To reach out to the African American youth of Texas is why it was ideal for us to be the first major school in Texas to hire a black coach

Just like now they are playing down Charlie's recruiting and offensive problems. Its all Mack Bush's fault.

Agree with all of this.

Yep
I said it from the beginning, even before I was on board with Sumlin's coaching ability, that hiring a black coach meant something for a school like ours. We have a "hip" AA coach who connects with young black kids and completely demolishes the trashy negative recruiting angle that Big XII schools played for year.
Even had Sumlin failed, it would have meant something. Regardless of merit, we have always been an all white male military joint to many casual observers and that is easy to play up with a young kid.

Precisely.
Hell, I remember some black guys from the Corps my freshman and sophomore years would almost openly root for texas during the season because of their street cred and of course the lingering Vince Young memories.
Used to piss me off to no end because of my connections to the school. I'll always love Sherman for giving my little brother a chance, but Sumlin is exactly what we needed. Couldn't be happier with how it's turning out.

so the shag thinks they can flip Patrick, that ed oliver is overrated, and that they'll get either Brandon or deontay. I love that place

You have ti give them a little credit, at the very least they know where the power button on their laptops are.

Let's not get carried away--most likely they never turned the display laptops off when they bought them
